A pair of 5-8 AFC West squads go toe-to-toe on Thursday Night Football when the Justin Herbert-less Chargers head to Allegiant Stadium for a matchup with the Raiders.

Quarterback injuries have plagued the NFL in 2023, with Aaron Rodgers, Joe Burrow, Kirk Cousins, Daniel Jones, Deshaun Watson, and Anthony Richardson sidelined for the season. Then, there’s C.J. Stroud, Geno Smith, Trevor Lawrence, and Kenny Pickett, who are working to return to full strength for the playoff push.

Another star QB went down in Week 14 when Herbert fractured his finger in a 24-7 loss to the Broncos. The former Oregon Duck’s injury will require surgery, ending his 2023 campaign.

Easton Stick takes the reins in Los Angeles, a fifth-round draft pick in 2019, appearing in only two games in the previous five seasons. The 28-year-old completed 54% of his passes for 179 yards in the Chargers’ latest setback.

Quarterbacking has been a struggle in Las Vegas as well. Jimmy Garoppolo had a shaky start to the year, and when interim head coach Antonio Pierce took over for the Raiders heading into Week 9, Pierce made rookie Aidan O’Connell the starter.

O’Connell turned in one of his worst outings of the season in Week 14, throwing for 171 yards and an interception in a 3-0 defeat to the Vikings. To make matters worse, two-time Pro Bowler Josh Jacobs exited vs. Minnesota with a quad injury, leaving his Thursday Night Football availability in question.

While Las Vegas’ offense has underwhelmed, the defense has been stellar, allowing the ninth-fewest points per game. The Raiders are particularly strong against the pass, thanks to Maxx Crosby’s 13.5 sacks.

The Raiders will be a tough matchup for a Chargers’ offense that’s averaged 10 points per game over the past four weeks. With Herbert out of the lineup, things will get even more difficult for Los Angeles.

It was announced on Wednesday that Keenan Allen, who leads the Chargers by a mile in every receiving category, will miss Thursday Night Football with a heel injury. Allen’s 1,243 yards are the fourth-most in the NFL.

It’s been tough treading for Austin Ekeler this year. The seven-year veteran has gone over 100 total yards in only four games and is at risk of setting career lows in rushing and receiving yards.

However, this could be a spot where Ekeler finds his mojo. The Raiders are soft against the run, surrendering 127 yards per game.

Ekeler missed the Chargers and Raiders’ Week 3 meeting with an injury, but Los Angeles recorded 155 yards on the ground, and Joshua Kelley led the way with 65 yards.
