Tigers vs. Pirates: Odds, picks and predictions 8/2/23

The Detroit Tigers are listed as road favorites in Pittsburgh with Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound. The lefthander is still wearing the Old English D, after vetoing a trade that would have sent him to the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Oddsmakers have the Tigers at -130 with the O/U at 8.5 runs as they face the Pirates for the final time in 2023. We searched across the best MLB sportsbooks to provide the best odds for this game. It’s always beneficial though, to look at multiple sportsbooks, so you can take advantage of every promotion available and find your best odds for any bet.

Eduardo Rodriguez (6-5, 2.95 ERA, 91 K in 88.1 IP) vs Osvaldo Bido (2-1, 4.50 ERA, 28 K in 30 IP)

According to MLB.com, the Tigers had a deal in place with the Dodgers that would have sent Rodriguez to LA before the trade deadline on Tuesday afternoon. But, ERod exercised his trade veto rights and nixed the transaction. Rodriguez’s contract allows him to list 10 teams he cannot be traded to unless he agrees, and the Dodgers were on that list. Still a Tiger, Rodriguez will attempt to continue his mastery. His ERA and K-to-BBratop rank among the best in the AL.

Bido is an unknown entity: he’s making his seventh career start, and while Tigers scouts surely have pages of reports on the rookie righthander, it’s another thing to step into the box to face a pitcher you’ve never seen. Bido is a ground ball pitcher who keeps the ball out of the air (he’s only surrendered one home run). As a result, we expect a low-scoring contest on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

Veteran Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen is no stranger to Detroit hurler Eduardo Rodriguez. In 14 PA’s against Rodriguez, Cutch is hitting .417 with one homer and a .500 on-base percentage… The Pirates have 17 HR in their last 11 games, flexing power they never showed earlier in the season.

Runs Under 8.5 (-112 from FanDuel Michigan)

It’s getaway day, which means both the Tigers and Pirates will be hopping planes after Wednesday’s game to go out of town. Often, that leads to anxious swinging and a pitcher-dominated game. As a result, we like the UNDER on 8.5 runs. A $112 bet would win $100 on FanDuel if the two teams combine for eight runs or less.

We missed on our SGP for Tuesday’s game, but we’re back at it today with another bet for the Tigers game with big odds and a big potential payoff. Odds on this three-leg same-game parlay are +1453 from FanDuel.

  • Tie, First 5 Innings Result
  • Under 8.5 Total Runs
  • Pittsburgh Pirates To Win, Moneyline

A $100 winning bet (game is tied through 5 innings, Pirates win, total score by both teams is below 9 runs) on our same-game parlay would pay a whopping $1,453, plus your stake.
