UEFA ranks the Bundesliga as the top European league

Bayern Munich sit in second place in the Bundesliga and are once again on track to qualify for the Champions League. The 2024/25 Champions League campaign will see a new structure brought to the tournament that includes an expanded league phase in place of the traditional group stage.

The new league phase will bring in four additional spaces, two of which are for each of the two European leagues with the top UEFA coefficient rankings. At the end of this season’s edition of the Champions League group stage, the one and two positions are held by Germany and Italy respectively (SkySportsNews via @footitalia1).

Currently, this would see each of Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern, VfB Stuttgart, RB Leipzig, and Borussia Dortmund qualify for the Champions League from the Bundesliga, although this is likely to change by the end of the season.

This year underdogs Union Berlin competed for the first time in Europe’s premier competition. While their Champions League campaign was unsuccessful and Union sees themselves struggling in the Bundesliga, minnows Heidenheim are only seven points off fifth and could potentially qualify for the Champions League after only a season in the Bundesliga.

The UEFA coefficient rankings are subject to change and it seems unlikely that the performances of the English teams in the latter half of the Champions League won’t push a Premier League team into one of the two spaces. However, Bundesliga and Serie A fans will be hoping that their country’s representative teams will keep them at the top of the rankings.
