Desperate Hammers can capitalise on faltering United

While Erik ten Hag’s men may have impressed in achieving a top-four place at this stage, there is no doubt that their better form has come at Old Trafford, and they have been far more erratic on the road.

Having been far from convincing outside Manchester, United looked to have found something extra when going 2-0 up away at Tottenham, but they let that advantage slip and had to settle for a 2-2 draw before they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at Brighton on Thursday.

The Hammers are desperate for the win to ensure their Premier League survival. David Moyes’s squad go into Sunday’s clash on the back of a three-match losing streak but two of those games were away and they faced a resurgent Liverpool as well as rampant defending champions Manchester City in that run.

Their best form has clearly come at the London Stadium, having lost just two of their last 10 at home, and they can cause something of an upset against a faltering United side that are losing momentum.

Even when they have been winning, and sometimes comfortably, the Red Devils have hardly set the world alight when it comes to hitting the net, and they have bettered only two other sides in the top half for goals scored.

United have really struggled in the final third of late – and whether it is down to a lack of creativity or an inability to take chances, the goals have dried up.

They have not got on the scoresheet in four of their previous six matches away from Old Trafford and may well struggle again, particularly having had less time to refresh from the midweek clash than their opponents.

It certainly does not bode well for a free-scoring affair with under 2.5 goals on offer at 11/10, and Manchester United’s total goals to be under 1.5 at 5/6, but a Hammers win with under 2.5 goals offers a little more value at 8/5.

Bowen can play key role

While Jarrod Bowen may not have had his best season for West Ham, he remains a hugely important figure for Moyes, having featured in every Premier League game so far among 47 appearances in 2022-23.

The 25-year-old is a willing runner with the ability to take on opponents and cause plenty of havoc for a makeshift visiting defence. Bowen has scored 11 goals in all competitions this term, while he has provided a further seven assists, and he looks more than capable of making a difference against the Red Devils on Sunday evening.

Midfield pair in the thick of things

Given what is on offer in this game for both sides, it would be no surprise to see a few tackles flying at the London Stadium and that should bring the cards market into play.

United have averaged 11.3 fouls per game in the Premier League this season – only five teams are above them in this department – and it is holding midfielder Casemiro that has often come to referees’ attention.

The former Real Madrid ace has amassed 39 fouls. Only Luke Shaw (43) has more for the Red Devils. The Brazilian has been shown six yellow cards and two reds.

Casemiro has been cautioned three times in his last five appearances in all competitions, including his previous outing in the 1-0 loss at Brighton, and it would be no surprise to see him in the book again.

Joining him on the cautions list could be West Ham midfielder Flynn Downes, who may be in line for another starting opportunity should Declan Rice not recover in time from the illness that kept him out of the defeat at Manchester City in midweek.

The 24-year-old has had to be patient for first-team chances this season and has made just five league starts to date. With such little time to impress, it is often the case that a player will try to do too much when named in the starting XI.

This appeared to happen at the Etihad, where Downes picked up a booking, and there is a good chance of a further yellow on Sunday against the other Manchester outfit.
