Manchester United will be expected to advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup when they entertain Reading at Old Trafford on Saturday (kick-off, 8pm).

Class to show at Old Trafford

Twelve-time FA Cup winners Manchester United have not given their fans much to cheer in the competition in recent years, but the signs are good ahead of Saturday’s tie against Reading.

United were knocked out in the fourth round last season by Middlesbrough, who won 9-8 on penalties at Old Trafford on a famous night for the Championship club.

The Red Devils last lifted the trophy in 2016, when they beat Crystal Palace in extra time, and they have only reached the final once since then.

Even though they lost 3-2 to Arsenal last weekend in the Premier League, United look a real force under coach Erik ten Hag. They are one step away from reaching the EFL Cup final after beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 in midweek and have lost just one of their previous 12 in all competitions.

Ten Hag’s side have kept seven clean sheets in their previous 12 matches at Old Trafford and they should get the job done without conceding against a Reading side who have failed to score in their last two away games.

Goals should flow in Manchester

Reading manager and former United player Paul Ince will get a good reception from the home fans on Saturday night, but the respect will go out of the window once the first whistle sounds.

United have been ruthless in recent weeks against the majority of their opponents, while Reading have started to slide down the Championship table.

Ince’s side are without a win in four away matches in the second tier and three of those games have ended in defeat.

Away from home, they have won only one in 10 and they have conceded 1.5 goals per 90 minutes in the league throughout the campaign.

United’s home form suggests we could witness a convincing victory for the Red Devils, and 3-0 offers plenty of value this weekend.

Ten Hag’s side have scored three goals in four of their previous five at Old Trafford, and three of those games have ended in 3-0 scorelines.

Weghorst to build on first goal

Eyebrows were raised when United confirmed Wout Weghorst had joined the club this month, but in midweek he showed why the club decided to add another body in the final third.

With Cristiano Ronaldo now playing in Saudi Arabia, United needed another focal point in attack, and Weghorst offers something different to their current options.

The Netherlands striker arrived on loan until the end of the season from Burnley and he showed a real striker's instinct to score United's second goal against Forest.

Ten Hag is likely to rest Marcus Rashford after another superb display in midweek, so Weghorst is expected to lead an inexperienced front three and he can capitalise on Reading's weaker defence.
