WGC Dell Technologies Match Play odds: Scheffler and Rahm open as betting favourites

The WGC Dell Technologies Match Play is back at Austin Country Club this week.

The latest: Scottie Scheffler is the favourite and for good reason. He’s coming off a win and is also defending his championship here from last season. But we think a fellow Texas Longhorn — Jordan Spieth — prevents great value while Sahith Theegala is a name worth keeping an eye on.

Here are the latest WGC Dell Technologies Match Play odds for the tournament beginning on March 22.

Best WGC Dell Technologies Match Play odds

The favourite: Scottie Scheffler (+800)

You can’t poke any holes in Scheffler’s game right now so we won’t detract from him being the favourite.

The 26-year-old has won two of his past four starts and hasn’t finished outside the top 12 at an event since October. His most recent showing at the Players Championship was something special, too. Scheffler ran away with the PGA Tour’s crowned jewel and finished five shots clear of Tyrrell Hatton.

Scheffler ranks first in strokes gained: tee-to-green (+2,268) this season and it doesn’t seem like he’s going to slow down any time soon.

He won this event last season by topping Matthew Fitzpatrick in a sudden-death playoff to advance from the group stage before beating Billy Horschel, Seamus Power, Dustin Johnson and Kevin Kisner in the elimination stage.

Scheffler plays well wherever he goes but this place clearly fits his eye considering he was runner-up here in 2021, too. He has gone 1 for 2 on title defences this season (won the WM Phoenix Open and T4 at Arnold Palmer Invitational).

Other choices

Best value: Jordan Spieth (+2,000)

Spieth is running hot right now and he typically performs well at events in Texas.

He’s entering this event with three straight top 20s and two of those finishes probably should have been wins.

Three weeks ago, Spieth had a lead on the back nine at the Arnold Palmer Invitational but an ice-cold putter ended up foiling him. Last week he finished in a tie for third at the Valspar Championship and he was within one shot of the lead for most of the event’s final round.

The reason for this new-found consistency has been his ball-striking. Spieth has picked up strokes to the field on approach in five straight events, according to DataGolf.

Player to watch: Sahith Theegala (+6,600)

Theegala has the 18th-best birdie average on tour (4.30) and that should suit him well at Austin Country Club.

He has two top-six finishes in his last five starts and hasn’t missed the cut at an event since October.

The 25-year-old also has the 12th-best putting average (1.707) and has gained strokes putting in five of his last six starts.

Canadian WGC Dell Technologies Match Play odds

There are five Canadians teeing it up at Austin CC this week. Conners’ 55-to-1 odds are the shortest of any Canuck as of March 20.

  • Conners will look to build off last year's solo third finish with another strong showing this time around. He missed the cut at the Players two weeks ago but has generally been consistent this season, placing inside the top 25 in seven of his last 10 starts.
  • Hadwin's had some solid moments this season. He was in contention at the WM Phoenix Open until a lacklustre final round and also finished T13 at the Players.
  • Taylor ranks 13th on the PGA Tour's money list through the Honda Classic ($3,229,949) largely thanks to his runner-up finish in Phoenix. The 34-year-old is playing some solid golf and finished T10 at the Valspar Championship last week.
