When will the EFL Championship start?

The first match in the 2023-24 EFL Championship will be between Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton on Saturday, August 5 at 5am (AEST).

Australian players in the EFL Championship

After finishing fourth in last year's Championship, Middlesbrough will be hoping to be a contender for promotion this season, with three Aussies on their books - Riley McGree, Sam Silvera and Tom Glover.

McGree is very much established within the first-team framework, while Glover and Silvera have work to get in the best XI.

Harry Souttar has dropped from the Premier League to Championship with Leicester City and will be keen to ensure the Foxes bounce back to the top division.

After an excellent season at Central Coast Mariners alongside Silvera, Nectarios Triantis could be a dark-horse to impress this season at Sunderland.

With only fleeting first-team appearances on his resume, Caleb Watts will be keen to make an impression now that Southampton has been relegated.

Massimo Luongo and Cameron Burgess will hopefully make many appearances together at Ipswich Town, and Marlee Francios could get an opportunity at Bristol City.

EFL Championship prediction

The Championship is always a tough league to predict with the large movement of players, but several clubs with Aussies are shaping to have a successful season.

Souttar's Leicester is tipped to win the Championship, while Southampton (Watts), Middlesbrough (McGree, Silvera, Glover) and Ipswich Town (Luongo, Burgess) are expected to be in the promotion mix.

Sunderland (Triantis) and Bristol City (Francois) will need to have surprise seasons to figure in the top reaches of the standings.
