According to Lewis Hamilton, Formula 1 is a club for billionaire kids. Many countries lack the resources to support the talent. The whole process from karting to F1 can cost about €10 million euros. Only eight drivers have joined the F 1 grid in the last five years. The common thread is that the drivers are supported by one of the major teams, large business sponsors, or their rich family. Lance Stroll has been spotlighted on this topic. He excelled in junior contests and topped the Formula 4 and F3 driver standings. His family invested €1 million before being accepted into the Red Bull Junior Program.
The number of slots available for new Formula 1 drivers is limited. Teams have two options: spend millions on a promising driver or wait for a billionaire to compete with their child. Formula One drivers are not necessarily the best of the good but the greatest of wealthy.
