After a relatively acrimonious split between David de Gea and his former club Manchester United in the summer following a breakdown of negotiations - the prospect of the Spaniard returning to Old Trafford seemed extremely unlikely.

It became even more unlikely that we would ever see De Gea in a United shirt after the club acquired Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana for a price tag of £47million in July.

However, the entire landscape of a football club can change in just weeks - and given the rocky and inconsistent start Onana has experienced at his new club this season - rumblings of De Gea potentially returning have been gathering steam.

However, it will be interesting to see whether those odds widen over the coming days following United's most recent fixture against cross-city rivals Manchester City. Despite going down 3-0 - Onana starred for the home side with seven saves to make the scoreline somewhat respectable.
