2023 U.S. Open picks, odds, field, date: Surprising PGA predictions by the golf model that's nailed 9 majors

California has a rich history of hosting the U.S. Open, but this year will be the first time the major tournament will be held at the Los Angeles Country Club. Jon Rahm won the last time it took place in the Golden State in 2021 and is one of the top 2023 U.S. Open contenders. Rahm is the overall favorite in the 2023 U.S. Open odds at Caesars Sportsbook at 8-1. The U.S. Open 2023 begins on Thursday, June 15. Brooks Koepka is 9-1 to win his second major of the year, but he'll need to hold off others in the 2023 U.S. Open field like Max Homa (14-1), Rory McIlroy (10-1) and Scottie Scheffler (17-2).

Before locking in your 2023 U.S. Open picks or entering any PGA DFS tournaments on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, be sure to see the 2023 U.S. Open predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $8,300 on its best bets since that point, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. And at the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scottie Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, the model included Nick Hardy and Davis Riley in its best bets to win the 2023 Zurich Classic. That bet hit at +4500, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned over $1,100. McClure's best bets also included Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, even though he hadn't won a PGA Tour event since 2018.

This same model has also nailed a whopping nine majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2023 U.S. Open field is taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected 2023 U.S. Open leaderboard.

Top 2023 U.S. Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the U.S. Open 2023: Max Homa, a six-time PGA Tour champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles this week and doesn't even crack the top 10. Homa is just one of four players to record multiple wins this season, but he's been inconsistent in recent weeks.

The 32-year-old is coming off a top-10 finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge, but he's finished 43rd or worse in four of his last six starts on the PGA Tour. He's also struggled on golf's biggest stages, finishing 43rd or worse in his last four starts at a major championship, which includes a 47th-place showing at the U.S. Open in 2022. He's not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the 2023 U.S. Open field. See which golfers to fade here.

Another surprise: Viktor Hovland, a 25-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. After forgettable finishes at the RBC Heritage and Wells Fargo Championship, Hovland tied for 16th in his last outing at the Charles Schwab Challenge after tying for second behind Koepka at the PGA Championship.

Hovland withdrew from the 2021 U.S. Open before missing the cut in last year's event. In his two prior appearances, he finished in the top 15, and although his accuracy off the tee failed him last year, he hit fairways at a 12% higher rate than the average of the field at the Charles Schwab Challenge. His approach play has been inconsistent recently, but he ranks 11th in strokes gained on approach this season (.711) and could position himself for a win with steady iron play at the Los Angeles Country Club. See who else to pick here
