Georgia has needed other playmakers to step up all season, but never more than now with Bowers sidelined. The Bulldogs benefit from a Week 8 bye that provided Kirby Smart ample time to formulate a game plan to continue dominating offensively.
While Florida is 5-2 on the year, the Gators have only one conference loss, meaning Billy Napier’s crew is still in the hunt to represent the East in the SEC Championship. To stay on track, the Gators must buck the trend this week and notch a victory over Georgia, as Florida has beaten the Dawgs just once since 2017.
The Bulldogs’ approach in this game should be simple: run the damn ball. The Gators proved to be susceptible against the rush in a 33-14 loss to Kentucky headlined by an unbelievable 280 yards and three touchdowns from Ray Davis.
Georgia gains 172 rushing yards per game, led by Daijun Edwards’ 460 yards and six touchdowns. However, the Bulldogs will need Carson Beck to make plays vs. a Florida defense that has been stellar on third down.
Conversely, Georgia’s defense has also been superb on third down, while Florida has struggled to move the chains. With the Bulldogs focusing on pounding the rock and the Dawgs’ defense allowing the seventh-fewest points per game in FBS, expect the clock to wind down quickly with both teams punting the ball away often.
With Bowers out, Oscar Delp figures to gain an expanded workload. Delp has 13 catches for 160 yards, and his two receiving touchdowns are tied for the second-most for Georgia.
Bowers leads the Bulldogs with four touchdown catches, but those redzone targets will be spread around in the star TE’s absence. Look for Delp to be the beneficiary when Georgia marches into Gators territory and the field shortens.
