The Reds couldn’t get much going in the first two games of this series, and they fell 10-8 on Friday for another loss. Cincinnati’s Nick Martini (three runs) and Will Benson each had four RBI in the defeat. On Saturday Cincinnati scored in the top of the 11th inning in order to power out an 8-7 victory. Matt McLain put up two RBI and a homer in the win, and Nick Martini had three hits with two RBI. 

It’ll be Graham Ashcraft in the starting job for the Reds on Sunday. Across his 24 starts this year Ashcraft is 7-8 with a 4.84 ERA and 100 Ks in 134.0 innings. Ashcraft is 3-1 with a 2.72 ERA and 37 Ks in 46.1 innings.

Over on the Diamondbacks’ side, they eked out a 3-2 win in the Thursday opener of this set, then powered out the big victory in game two. Jace Peterson posted three RBI and a run in that win. On Saturday Arizona gave up seven runs over the final four innings and even managed to come back from three runs down in the 10th. Ketel Marte had a three-run homer, and Christian Walker added two hits with an RBI. 

In the starter role for the Diamondbacks on Sunday it’ll be Slade Cecconi. In four games (two starts) this year so far Cecconi has a 2.93 ERA without a decision. He’s managed nine Ks in 15.1 innings as well.

I’ll probably try the Reds in this one. Ashcraft isn’t doing too bad lately. In his last three starts he’s 1-1 with seven earned over 21.0 innings total. Ashcraft has gone 7.0 innings in each of those outings and he should be able to put up a fairly deep run here. As for Cecconi, he’s coming off 5.0 innings with one earned in a pretty good showing versus Texas on August 21. In the Saturday game Cincinnati started pretty slow at the plate, but the offense eventually came around. The Reds used six different pitchers in the win, so they’ll need Ashcraft to come through in this one. I think Cincinnati pulls it off.
