After a disastrous four-game sweep at the hands of the Rangers, the Toronto Blue Jays have turned it on, picking up four straight wins to move past both Texas and Seattle for the final AL Wild Card spot.

The job isn’t done for the Jays, though, who will look to keep rolling when they visit the New York Yankees tonight.

Toronto’s offense finally woke up with seven runs in the series opener on Tuesday night and the Jays may need a similar effort tonight with starter Kevin Gausman not looking his best.

Find out if the visitors can get it done again in our Blue Jays vs. Yankees MLB picks for Wednesday, September 20.

Blue Jays vs Yankees predictions

The Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees came into this series as two of the more sluggish offenses in baseball this month but Toronto’s bats came out swinging with seven runs and three homers en route to the club’s highest-scoring game since September 5.

The Jays could have another opportunity to put up some runs tonight as they’ll be facing Michael King, a reliever who joined the Yankees rotation in late August. The right-hander has been solid in his transition, allowing just seven runs (six earned) across his six starts this year while posting a 2.77 ERA over 46 appearances, though his 3.49 xERA suggests that he has been a bit fortunate.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays will send Kevin Gausman to the mound, who’s arguably playing his worst baseball of the season right now. The right-hander was pulled after just 4 2/3 innings in his last start against the Rangers on September 14 after allowing six hits and four earned runs, marking the sixth time he allowed at least three earned runs in his last 10 outings.

With tonight’s total set at a very low 7.5 runs and both pitchers looking like question marks at best, I think these two offenses will just about cash the Over.

My best bet: Over 7.5 (+101 at SIA)

Blue Jays vs Yankees same-game parlay

Over 7.5 (-105)

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to record 2+ total bases (+130)

Michael King to record 5+ strikeouts (-195)

On top of taking the Over on 7.5 runs, tonight’s same-game parlay will hone in on Vladimir Guerrero Jr., one of Toronto’s best hitters this month, and King, who’s been sitting down plenty of batters since joining the Yankees rotation.

Guerrero Jr. went hitless in Tuesday’s series opener, snapping a five-game hit streak where he recorded 4+ bases in three of those contests. The Jays slugger has found success against the Yankees this season with four multi-base performances in seven meetings, so look for him to get going again tonight.

King has been a solid strikeout producer all season for New York with 108 Ks in 87 2/3 innings. He’s punched out at least eight batters in two straight starts while recording 5+ Ks in three of his last four outings. If he manages to pitch into the fifth inning, he should easily get to this number tonight.

Blue Jays vs Yankees moneyline and Over/Under analysis

Tuesday’s series opener was a pick‘em but the MLB odds have adjusted today with the Blue Jays opening as the -116 road favorite. Although Gausman has looked questionable of late, I’m still going to give the edge to the visitors as they should be the hungrier team with playoff implications on the line.

The Yankees own the sixth-worst offense in the majors this month, scoring just 68 runs in 17 games. That presents a good chance for Gausman to forget about his struggles and get back into rhythm vs. a team that he’s pitched well against this season. The right-hander has held New York to just two earned runs over two starts while pitching through the seventh inning in both games.

As discussed above, I also like the Over on 7.5 runs, though we’ll probably have to see the Blue Jays do most of the legwork as they did in the opener. Outside of the Texas series where Toronto scored just nine runs in four contests, the Jays have actually been decent at the plate, scoring 5.69 runs per game this month.

The Over is also 9-4 in New York’s last 13 home games and 5-1 in Toronto’s last six contests on the road.

Starting pitchers

Kevin Gausman (11-9, 3.40 ERA): Gausman has been hit or miss down the stretch, holding opponents to two earned runs or fewer in seven of his last 13 starts but allowing 4+ runs in three of those contests. The right-hander has also struggled to pitch deep into games, getting pulled before the sixth inning in five of his last eight starts.

Michael King (4-6, 2.77 ERA): King bent but didn’t break in his last start on September 14, giving up six hits but just one run to the Red Sox over 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander has held opponents to one earned run or less in each of his last five starts.
