Canucks vs Rangers Picks, Predictions & Odds Tonight

Thatcher Demko was outstanding at the start of the season but has found himself in a rut. Meanwhile, Artemi Panarin comes into this game red hot, and our NHL picks believe he'll land on the score sheet more than once tonight.

Two of the top four teams in the NHL are set to collide at Madison Square Garden when the New York Rangers host the Vancouver Canucks. NHL odds have the home side favored with a total of 6.5.

Artemi Panarin has been on fire for New York with points in seven straight and he'll look to pad his stats against a struggling Thatcher Demko. His recent play has created some good value, which is why I'll be taking a look at his NHL player props.

How am I betting on Panarin tonight? I’ll discuss in my free NHL picks for the Canucks vs Rangers on Monday, January 8.

Canucks vs Rangers predictions

The New York Rangers fell 4-3 to the Canadiens in a shootout in their last game on Saturday but it wasn’t for lack of effort from their leading scorer, Artemi Panarin, who had a goal and an assist to record his second straight multi-point outing.

Panarin skates into Monday with multiple points in four of his last six contests and 11 total points since Christmas, tied for third-most in the league over that span.

Panarin and the Rangers will look to solve Vancouver Canucks netminder Thatcher Demko, who’s hit a bit of a rough patch over the last month. Demko earned the win against New Jersey on Saturday but gave up four goals in the process while posting a sub-par .840 SV%.

The Canucks goaltender has allowed at least three goals in nine of his last 12 starts going back to November 30, posting a mediocre .901 SV% and 3.08 GAA over that span — a significant fall off compared to the .928 SV% and 2.10 GAA he owned through the first two months of the season.

The Rangers offense comes into this matchup in good form, averaging 3.67 goals per game over their last nine outings, and should be able to keep that trend going against a struggling Demko. With Panarin leading the charge, I’ll look for the Rangers star to hit the Over on 1.5 points tonight as my best bet.

My best bet: Artemi Panarin Over 1.5 points (+140 at SIA)

Canucks vs Rangers same-game parlay

Rangers moneyline

I can't lock in a multi-point game for Panarin in the same-game parlay, so I’ll look for him to score a goal instead. Panarin has a goal in two straight and has scored in seven of his last nine contests — racking up an impressive nine total tallies over that span.

The Rangers are 7-3-1 over their last 11 contests with five of those games featuring at least seven total goals. Meanwhile, the Canucks have seen 7+ goals scored in five of their last seven outings.

Canucks vs Rangers moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Rangers skate into tonight’s contest as the home favorite at -145 on the moneyline with the total set at 6.5 goals. Given New York’s advantage between the pipes, I like the hosts to take two points while cashing the Over in this matchup.

Normally I’d be talking about an elite goaltending matchup between Igor Shesterkin and Demko, but neither netminder has performed to their full potential this season.

Fortunately for the Rangers, Shesterkin has turned things around since mid-December, posting an excellent .924 SV% and 2.12 GAA over his last seven games after battling through some early-season inconsistency. While Demko has allowed 20 goals over his last six starts, Shesterkin has held opponents to two goals or fewer in five of his last seven outings, which should give the Rangers an edge tonight.

Both teams have been playing high-scoring duels of late with New York cashing the Over in seven of its last nine contests and Vancouver doing so in six of its last eight.
