Everton can make point

City arrive at Goodison Park as champions of England, Europe and the world, but it’s Everton who have taken more points from their previous five league matches.

The Toffees’ victories over Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Burnley in December were followed by a 2-1 defeat at Spurs in which they could easily have taken all three points.

In contrast, City’s only win in their past five Premier League matches came at Luton Town and, were it not for Everton’s 10-point deduction, the gap between the sides would be five places rather than 10, and eight points instead of 18.

City are not quite there yet with getting their injured stars back and it seems there is only a slim chance that Erling Haaland will feature, with Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne still sidelined.

At the current odds, there could be some value in swerving City given the potential for tiredness due to travel and playing two Club World Cup games while missing only one in the league.

They had dropped some sloppy points before that competition, letting a 2-0 lead slip late on against Crystal Palace, losing at Aston Villa and being held to draws by Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea. Another draw at a fired-up Everton would come as no surprise and at 3/1 the odds are generous.

High-scoring draw worth chancing

City signed off from the Premier League with a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace – the fourth time in six league games they had shared the points – and a similar outcome is worth backing here.

Everton have scored in 10 of their previous 11 games, including all of the last six, and kept clean sheets in the four victories mentioned above.

However, shutting out City is one of the toughest tasks in world football and Pep Guardiola’s side have scored at least twice in seven of their previous eight games.

With Everton up for the fight and playing some great stuff, and City usually being good for two goals in any game, a 2-2 correct score looks to have a good chance of hitting on Wednesday.

Back Branthwaite in bet builder

The first leg of our 11/1 bet builder is for both teams to score. Everton have found the net in each of their previous six matches, while City have only failed to score in two of 28 games this season and, unusually, have conceded against the likes of Crystal Palace, Luton Town and Bournemouth.

Add to that Everton to have four or more shots on target in a game that could see them on the front foot more than you might expect usually from a Sean Dyche team against one of the top sides. They managed twice that number in the 2-1 defeat at Spurs, two more than their hosts.

The final leg would really boost the odds and it’s for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite to pick up a yellow card. The 21-year-old was booked in three of his first four Premier League appearances of the season and, while only two more cautions have followed, he will be more susceptible against a City side full of skilful midfielders and forwards.

Everton vs Manchester City tip 3: Bet builder: Both teams to score – Yes; Everton to have four or more shots on target; and Jarrad Branthwaite to be shown a card @ 11/1 with Paddy Power
