Tennessee stands as a 6.5-point favorite for the Citrus Bowl. The Volunteers are -235 to win straight up, and oddsmakers gave this contest a total of 35.5 points.

The total for this game dropped since first released because Tennessee will be without its starting quarterback. Joe Milton, one of the SEC’s better signal callers, opted out of the Citrus Bowl.

Instead, freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava will start in his place. Iamaleava attempted 26 passes this season, completing 16 of them for 163 yards and an interception.

Iamaleava’s first career start comes against one of college football’s best defenses. Defense is the name of the game for Iowa, as it ranks fourth in points allowed per game (13.2) and fifth in yards (274.8). The linebacker duo of Jay Higgins (155 tackles) and Nick Jackson (99 tackles) is arguably one of the best in the Big Ten.

Tennessee will likely lean on its run game, which averages the 12th-most yards per game nationally (202.6) thanks mainly to tailback Jaylen Wright (1,013 yards, four touchdowns). However, Wright and fellow tailback Jabari Small opted out of this game, too. Expect Dylan Sampson and Cameron Seldon to get the carries.

Meanwhile, the Hawkeye offense ranks dead last nationally in total yards per game (240.2) and finished averaging the fourth fewest points per game (16.6).

We don’t anticipate this being a high-scoring affair by any means. The Hawkyes tend to turn just about every game into a cage match, regardless of the opponent.

With a first-time starter under center for Tennessee and the Volunteers missing their starting running back, points might be harder to come by than normal. The under hit in 11 of Iowa’s 13 games this season, and we think that trend continues in the Citrus Bowl.
