Old foes renew hostilities on Sunday when the leaders of the AFC North, the Lions, welcome the bottom-feeding Bears to Detroit. Justin Fields returns to the lineup after missing four games with a dislocated thumb, while the Lions look to improve to 4-1 at the friendly confines of Ford Field.

The Bears carry their woeful 1-4 away record into Ford Field, facing one of the NFC’s most formidable outfits, particularly at home. The Lions boast the league’s fourth-most productive pass (267.4 yards per game) and rush offense (139 yards per game), while the Bears rely heavily on their fifth-ranked rush attack (135.1 yards per game).

While many exist, the most glaring mismatch pits the Lions’ explosive pass attack against the Bears’ 26th-ranked pass defense. That’s where Jared Goff and the Lions should impose their superiority. In correlation, the Bears allow 25.5 points per contest, the league’s sixth-most.

Conversely, the Lions can score at will if they find their rhythm, which happens more often than not at Ford Field. The Lions average 26.8 points per game, the NFL’s sixth-most prolific offense.

Even if the Bears miraculously find a way to impede the Lions’ fierce aerial attack, turnovers could once again haunt the visitors. Chicago has turned the ball over 18 times, tied for the most in the NFL, and the Lions are 7-1 when forcing at least one turnover.

The three Lions’ home wins have come by margins of 14, 18, and 12. The 12-point victory came against the Raiders, a scoreline that flattered the visitors. Dan Campbell’s team feasted on the two sub-.500 teams that played at Ford Field, beating the Panthers by 18 and the Falcons by 14.

The Bears suffered their four away defeats by an average of 16.25 points, their worst margin of defeat coming against the Chiefs at Arrowhead, where they lost 41-10 in Week 3. They lost by 10 at Tampa Bay and 17 against the Chargers in Los Angeles.

Look for the Lions’ dominance at home to continue against the NFC’s joint-fourth-worst road team.

Sam LaPorta is one of Goff’s primary targets. The 6-foot-3 rookie tight end has showcased his ability to find separation against some of the best pass coverages. Even when separation is hard to come by, LaPorta has excelled.

He has notched over 45 yards in six of nine contests, including all four at home. His lowest total at Ford Field came against the Panthers, where he gained 47 yards. Mix in the Bears’ abhorrent pass defense, making this prop about as tasty as a perfectly-prepared Thanksgiving dinner.
