Washington (3-5) has dropped five of its last six games since a 2-0 start and is in a stretch of four road dates in a five-week span.

Second-year quarterback Sam Howell has impressed with 2,146 passing yards and 13 touchdowns in eight starts, but there are serious questions about the Commanders’ defense, which is surrendering the second-most points (28.5 per game), fourth-most total yards (374.1) and just traded away starting edge players Chase Young and Montez Sweat this week.

The Patriots (2-6) also are struggling in the AFC East basement, with four losses in their last five games.

QB Mac Jones and the New England offense have lost 13 turnovers and rank next to last in points per game (14.8). Meanwhile, the injury-afflicted Pats defense is giving up an average of 26 points per contest (26th).

New England, though, is a consensus 3-point home favorite Sunday while the game total is lingering in the 41-point range.

Despite topping 20 points only twice so far this season, Jones and the Pats should find the going easier Sunday against a Commanders defense that has allowed 33 or more points in five of its last seven outings.

Likewise, Howell and the Washington attack should be able to do some damage against the Pats, who have allowed 21-plus points in all but one game so far.

Jones has thrown only nine touchdowns in eight games.

However, he has two TD tosses apiece in his last two outings and now gets to throw against a Washington defense that has surrendered a league-high 18 passing touchdowns on the season.

The prop’s plus-money odds only add to the allure.
