The Wolverines and Spartans’ rivalry dates back to 1898, and Michigan holds a 72-38-5 record vs. its in-state foe. But recent matchups have been evenly matched, as Michigan State has six wins in the last 10 meetings.

This year’s game carries higher stakes than usual, considering Michigan State has an opportunity to hurt Michigan’s chances at Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff berths. Plus, the rivalry reached a fever pitch in 2022 when Wolverines and Spartans players got into a physical altercation after Michigan’s 29-7 victory.

Big Blue has been wrecking ball this season, winning games by an average of 32 points. However, the Wolverines have yet to face a ranked opponent.

The Spartans started 2023 with a 2-0 record but are winless since head coach Mel Tucker was suspended and later fired for off-the-field issues. Michigan State ranks in the bottom half of the Big Ten on both sides of the ball and has a steep hill to climb to pull the upset.

After last season’s postgame brawl, Michigan and Jim Harbaugh have plenty of motivation to put a shellacking on an inferior Michigan State squad.

The Wolverines’ defense is relentless, allowing an FBS-leading six points per game. Michigan gave up double-digit points just once in a 52-10 win over Minnesota.

The physicality continues offensively, as Big Blue averages 182 rushing yards per game. Michigan’s 39 points per game is second-best in the Big Ten, thanks largely to J.J. McCarthy’s 1,512 passing yards and 17 total touchdowns.

Michigan is in line to deliver another beatdown on Saturday night at Spartan Stadium.

McCarthy’s dual-threat abilities get lost in the shuffle due to Blake Corum’s dominant season, but J.J. is capable of picking up chunk yardage with his feet. The junior has 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns, averaging 5.3 yards per carry.

McCarthy has exceeded his rushing yards prop in four of Michigan’s seven games, with another opportunity to bolster his Heisman odds this weekend vs. the Spartans.
