NY Mets vs. Diamondbacks: Odds, probable pitchers and predictions

The New York Mets look to close out the first half of the season on a positive note as they continue a six-game road trip out West against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday at 9:40 p.m. at Chase Field.

After a back-and-forth affair through the first five innings, the Mets (39-46, 4th in NL East), broke through when Francisco Alvarez launched a go-ahead 467-foot two-run home run in the seventh inning, giving New York the lead for good.

Here's my betting analysis for the second matchup of this three-game series with odds from the best sportsbooks around New Jersey:

Tuesday, 4:10 p.m.: Max Scherzer (7-2, 3.87) vs. Zach Davies (1-4, 6.54)

Prediction: Mets 6, Diamondbacks 4

Result: Mets 8, Diamondbacks 5

Wednesday, 9:40 p.m.: Kodai Senga (6-5, 3.53) vs. Tommy Henry (5-1, 4.08)

For his third straight outing, Senga had minimal run support as he earned a no-decision in the Mets' 5-2 loss versus the Milwaukee Brewers last Wednesday night. The right-hander has struck out eight and allowed two or fewer runs in two of his last three starts. After winning Senga's first four starts of 2023, the Mets have dropped seven of his past 11 appearances.

While Henry posted a 4.61 ERA in June, he finished strong last month. The second-year starter conceded just four runs in his past 18 1/3 innings pitched. Henry struck out a career-high eight batters and won his second straight start with a 6-2 victory over the Angels on June 30.

New York has now won 20 of the last 27 meetings versus the Diamondbacks, including four of the previous five games in Arizona.

I'm betting on the Mets yet again as they win four straight for the first time since mid-May and go for the sweep tomorrow night.

Prediction: Mets 3, Diamondbacks 1

Thursday, 9:40 p.m.: Carlos Carrasco (2-3, 5.94) vs. Ryne Nelson (5-4, 4.67)

It's been anything but smooth sailing for Carrasco in his third season with the Mets. The team lost all five of his starts in June. "Cookie" has not made it out of the fifth inning of a game since May 31 versus the Phillies. The veteran right-hander has an unappealing 4.91 ERA on the road as opponents are hitting .261 against him.

Nelson has been tremendous in back-to-back starts. He's combined to allow six hits and only two earned runs in his last 13 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old previously surrendered three or more runs in four of five appearances dating back to May 29 versus the Rockies.

After dropping the first two games, the Diamondbacks avoid getting swept for the first time this season as they take the series finale.
