Opta supercomputer predicts Liverpool's Premier League finish
Opta's fabled supercomputer has predicted where Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool will finish in the Premier League this season.
The Reds moved themselves into first place this weekend after their dramatic 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, with Aston Villa's 1-0 win over Arsenal ensuring that Klopp's men will stay there until next week at the very least.
Despite a pretty disastrous 2022/23 campaign, Liverpool have been much improved this season, owing largely to their new-look midfield.
After 16 Premier League matches, the Reds sit on 37 points, four points above current champions Manchester City in fourth. At this stage last year, Liverpool had amassed a pretty measly 22 points in comparison.
Having used all of the algorithms and mathematical devices at its disposal, Opta's supercomputer has updated its predictions for where Liverpool will finish this season and it offers good and bad news for Klopp's side.
The good news is that the Reds will get themselves back into the Champions League spots, the bad news is that they will finish runners-up to Manchester City.
Man City are still Opta's favourites with a 47.8% chance of claiming another league title, while Liverpool only have a 31.5% chance of finishing top of the tree, although that percentage has increased since the beginning of December.
The next most likely to win the league are Arsenal at 16.6%, followed by Aston Villa at 4.1% and Tottenham at 0.1%.
Opta believe that Liverpool's most likely finish will be second, giving them a 32.4% chance of being runners-up this season, while it's almost guaranteed that the Reds will secure a spot in the top four.
The rest of December could prove pivotal for the Reds' season, with upcoming league games against Manchester United and Arsenal at Anfield, with Liverpool welcoming Newcastle United to Merseyside on New Year's Day.
If Liverpool can navigate a tricky festive period without any major slip-ups, Opta's supercomputer may bump the Reds up to favourites for the title.
