Outside tips to win The Masters: Hatton, Rose and Burns eye big weeks at Augusta while LIV star Oosthuizen is a threat

A stellar field is set to tee it up at the 2023 Masters this Easter with a host of top names in contention to win.

America’s world number one Scottie Scheffler romped to victory at Augusta last year but the Masters has a history of unlikely champions.

England’s Danny Willett claimed the green jacket in 2016 while South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel took the title in 2011 and Mike Weir from Canada won it in 2003.

So for every historic Tiger Woods win, there’s an underdog story to be told as well.

There is a number of top players in the field this year with the likes of Scheffler, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy eyeing glory.

But looking further down the list of bookies’ odds, there are plenty of names who could spring a surprise.

Tyrrell Hatton 40/1 

Hatton has been trending in right direction for several years now and he big breakthrough win appears close.

He won the prestigious Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2020 to secure his only PGA Tour victory to date but a second is surely not far away.

Hatton is in fine form having produced a stunning final round 65 to finish second at The Players and went close at the Phoenix Open and the API recently.

Often temperamental, Hatton doesn’t have a great record in the Majors and his best finish at the Masters was T18 in 2021.

But he’s a superb player and will be flying the flag for High Wycombe in Georgia.

Sam Burns 40/1 

Like good friend Scheffler, Burns has enjoyed some stunning results in recent years.

Since May 2021, he’s won the Valspar Championship twice and claimed glory at the Sanderson Farms Championship and the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Now, none of these tournaments are as big as the Majors and Burns is yet to find his best on the grandest stage.

He failed to make the cut at his only Masters appearance to date and his best Majors finish was T20 at last summer’s PGA Championship.

The 26-year-old is, however, cut from the same cloth as many of the top players in the game and could find himself in contention some Sunday afternoon.

Cameron Young 40/1 

Another up and coming star awaiting his breakthrough is Young.

The 25-year-old is yet to taste glory in the professional ranks so doing so at the Masters would be some achievement.

But he has already shown he can mix it at the Majors having finished T3 at the PGA Championship and second at The Open last year.

Young isn’t in great form, with only two top tens finishes this year, but is a supreme talent and one that will surely win big tournaments for years to come.

Justin Rose 50/1 

Now for a golden oldie.

England’s Rose won the US Open back in 2013 and has six top ten finishes in his Masters career, including a play-off defeat to Sergio Garcia in 2017.

After a few years away from the spotlight, Rose roared back by claiming a wonderful win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February.

He certainly has the game to challenge at Augusta and will have the added motivation of trying to qualify for Europe’s Ryder Cup team later this year.

Louis Oosthuizen 50/1

Surely a LIV Golfer couldn’t win the Masters, could they?

Oosthuizen is now over on the rival tour but has enjoyed a stellar career in elite golf.

The enigmatic 2010 Open champion always seems to be in contention at the biggest tournaments and has four top three finishes in his last 10 Majors.

He was runner-up at the 2012 Masters and memorably recorded an incredible albatross on the second hole in the final round.

If a LIV star is to upset the establishment at Augusta, Oosthuizen could well be the man to do it.

Tom Kim 50/1

South Korea star Kim is fast-becoming one of the most popular players in the game and looks destined for a huge career.

Still just 20 years old, Kim already has two PGA Tour wins to his name, claiming glory at Wyndham Championship and the Shriners Children’s Open last year.

He was also part of the International team at the Presidents Cup last September.

Kim will be making his debut at the Masters this spring and it would take some effort to go on a win it.

But he has already shown he can compete and beat the very best and will be eager to show his talent.
