Tigers vs. Guardians: Odds, picks and predictions 8/20/23

The Detroit Tigers have an opportunity on Sunday to win another series against a team ahead of them in the American League Central standings. That would be two series wins in the last week-and-a-half, yet Detroit is spinning its wheels in third place, still more than an arm’s length out of first place.

Odds from the top Michigan sportsbooks have the Tigers at +10000 to win the division. That’s a long shot, but still not an impossibility. Detroit is 6-4 since August 8, but they won’t face a team in front of them in the standings until the last weekend of the season.

On Sunday the unquestioned ace of the team, Eduardo Rodriguez, is on the mound in an attempt to get back in the win column.

Eduardo Rodriguez (8-6, 3.13 ERA, 109 K in 106.1 IP) vs. Logan Allen (6-5, 3.33 ERA, 95 K in 97.1 IP)

ERod had the worst start of his season last week against the Red Sox. In that game, the lefty couldn’t command his pitches, and the result was 10 hits, six runs, and a pair of home runs. He’s only allowed 10 home runs all season, and his 109-to-26 K-to-BB ratio is among the best in the league. That’s why we expect the southpaw to claw his way back and put in a good outing.

Allen has been one of the nice surprises for the Guardians in his rookie season. The Florida native has put up a +123 OPS, and he’s getting stronger as the season wears on. Two of his six quality starts have occurred in August. This will be his first time facing the Tigers.

Not one batter in the Detroit lineup has faced Allen… They will have a new face in the lineup in Carson Kelly, the former Arizona catcher who was added to the roster on Saturday. Kelly takes the place of Eric Haase, who was DFA’d. He’s basically Haase but two years younger, and a better defender behind the dish.

Detroit -1.5 Runs (+160 from Fanduel)
