Toon to take the points

Champions League hopefuls Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur meet on Sunday in a game that could define both clubs’ seasons.

The Magpies are fourth in the Premier League table, three points and a place above Spurs, who have also played a game more.

Both sides lost last weekend and will be looking to regain some rhythm as they each target a top-four finish. But the feeling around Newcastle is far more positive.

By contrast, the reticence of Spurs boss Cristian Stellini to tweak the tactics used by his predecessor Antonio Conte only seems to have accelerated Tottenham’s stagnation and they were incredibly underwhelming in their 3-2 home defeat to Bournemouth last weekend.

With the Lilywhites’ fans growing restless, playing away from home could be something of a relief – except they are facing a team who were starting to purr again before their 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa, beating Manchester United 2-0 in their previous  home game.

The Magpies won October’s reverse fixture at Spurs 2-1 and the past six meetings have featured both teams scoring.

That could be repeated on Sunday, with Newcastle capable of coming out on top in an entertaining game.

Kane key for Spurs

If Tottenham are to get anything at St James, their hopes could hinge on Harry Kane.

The England captain has a superb record at St James’ Park, scoring five times against Newcastle in the last three meetings with Spurs on Tyneside, and he was also on the scoresheet in the reverse fixture.

Kane failed to find the net against Bournemouth, but had scored seven in his previous six games for club and country.

The Magpies have the best defensive record in the Premier League, but have kept just one clean sheet in their past 10 Premier League games – and the 29-year-old could take advantage of any defensive foibles.

Robust pair could pick up cautions

There are plenty of bet builder options to look at for the game at St James’ Park and a couple of players to keep an eye on are defenders Dan Burn and Cristian Romero.

Newcastle’s Burn has enjoyed an excellent season, but has looked a bit leggy in recent weeks and is sure to have his hands full with Dejan Kulusevski likely to be attacking his channel. A sixth yellow card of the season in the league could beckon.

Spurs’ Romero has received six in the league and should have got a seventh against Bournemouth after a flurry of fouls.

On Sunday, both could attract the ire of referee David Coote, who might also award the home side plenty of corners.

Newcastle have taken a joint league high of 200 this season, averaging 6.66 per game. Adding in the Magpies having over 5.5 in the game is a decent way to boost #PickYourPunt selections.
