We have some interleague baseball on Monday evening in Motown as the Atlanta Braves (40-25, 20-10 away) hit the road to visit the Detroit Tigers (26-37, 14-17 home) at Comerica Park. The first pitch for the series opener is scheduled for 6:40 PM ET.

The Braves have already decided that Charlie Morton will get the start here. However, it’s still TBA who could pitch for the Tigers. This could end up being a game where they use a variety of arms.

Atlanta vs Detroit Probable Pitchers

Atlanta has one of the best pitching staffs in the big leagues and Morton is certainly doing his part. The right-hander is 5-6 with a 3.89 ERA in 12 starts, striking out 77 in 69.1 innings and walking 29. Although he does struggle with command at times, Morton is still very effective.

However, Morton is coming off a rather tough outing, allowing four earned in 4.2 frames against the New York Mets. Aside from them taking his deep twice, the veteran also walked four. He owns a career 2.00 ERA against the Tigers.

As previously mentioned, it’s not yet known who counters for Detroit. Eduardo Rodriguez is still injured, and all of the Tigers’ other starters aren’t on enough rest to start here. That means AJ Hinch may go with an opener.

Someone like Mason Englert is a possibility, who owns a 5.00 ERA in 21 relief appearances in 2023. Tyler Alexander is another option. The lefty has made one start already this season. He’s 1-1 with a 5.59 ERA in 29 innings.

Braves Are Rolling

By no surprise, Atlanta is sitting at the top of the National League East with a 40-25 record and looks like a legitimate World Series contender once again. The Braves have one of the best MLB lineups around who are scoring 5.2 runs per contest, hitting .264 as a group, and going deep at a very impressive rate with 107 home runs. That ranks second in the Majors.

Although Atlanta is 8-2 in their last 10 games though, Brian Snitker’s team did lose the rubber match on Sunday to the lowly Washington Nationals by a score of 6-2, which put an end to their seven-game win streak.

Detroit is Struggling

Anyone could’ve guessed the Tigers would be a long way below .500. While injuries have certainly played a factor, this ball club is just downright poor. They’re currently on a nine-game losing skid and rank dead last in numerous offensive categories, including runs and slugging. Certainly not a recipe for success.

Arizona just swept them and outscored AJ Hinch’s squad 23-11 in three contests. On a more positive note, Detroit is a tad better at home, going 14-16 as opposed to 12-21 on the road.

Braves vs Tigers Prediction

I honestly have a difficult time believing Atlanta won’t sweep. They’re a far more superior team and Morton tends to pitch well against the Tigers. Take the Braves Monday.
