Early Oil: Flemington best bets, preview for Saturday June 3

News Corp form analyst Brad Waters takes an early look at Saturday’s tough Flemington card.

BEST BET

KING MAGNUS (Race 8, No.1)

Ran on well to get the money at Flemington second-up. He’ll be fitter again for that win and should be hard to hold out again.

VALUE BET

OCEANS ABOVE (Race 5, No.2)

Oceans Above powered home from well back to score over 1600m last time out but stepping up to 2000m could be right up his alley, especially from barrier one.

EARLY QUADDIE

2, 7, 8, 9/2, 3, 4, 12/2, 5, 8, 9, 12/1, 2, 3, 4, 13

$100 flexi for 25 per cent

BIG6

2, 5, 8, 9, 12/1, 2, 3, 4, 13/2, 7/5, 6, 14/1, 2, 8/2, 4, 9

$100 flexi for 7.4 per cent

QUADDIE

Race 6: 1, 2, 7, 8

Race 7: 5, 6, 14

Race 8: 1, 2, 8, 15

Race 9: 2, 4, 9, 14

$100 flexi for 156 per cent

RACE 1: 11:50AM THE ROYAL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL TROPHY (1200m)

A tricky start to what promises to be a tough day for punters. Going with SHORESY (3) to get off to a good start after his pleasing fourth down the straight off a five-week break. He’ll be fitter for that. The Kiwi youngster CODIGO (1) is a stakes winner and should measure up to this. SUNSOURCE (2) impressed with his debut win in wet ground at Ballarat and his jumpouts have been solid. STEPARTY (4) was too good at Ballarat and will be better for the experience.

SUGGESTED BET: Shoresy to win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Shoresy $5 – $4.40.

RACE 2: 12:25PM GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL PLATE (2520m)

Another even race but THE GOOD FIGHT (8) finished off well over this course second-up. He’ll drop 8kg on that effort and will be fitter again. SWORDS DRAWN (2) was solid in tough conditions in the Warrnambool Cup and races well a Flemington. ALAKAHAN (7) was well held in the Andrew Ramsden last start but will find this easier. NEVER AGAIN (9) is racing well without winning and could work into a placing with only 50kg after Wiremu Pinn’s claim.

SUGGESTED BET: The Good Fight to win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: D’Aguilar $4.20 – $4.

RACE 3: 1:00PM GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL VOLUNTEERS THANK YOU TROPHY (1400m)

Probably the toughest race of the day so it might be worth having a small throw at the stumps on the $26 chance CHANDON BURJ (2), which performed well in the spring and her jumpout was solid. VERSILIA (12) has drawn wide but went well at Warrnambool first-up and will be fitter. FORTUNATE KISS (4) is going well in similar races and won’t be far away. PARTY FOR ONE (3) broke through at Flemington last time out and will go well again.

SUGGESTED BET: Chandon Burj each-way.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Party For One $4.20 – $3.50.

RACE 4: 1:35PM TAB / ATA TRAINERS’ TRUST HANDICAP (1100m)

LEGIO TEN (9) enjoyed the wide open spaces when charging home from the rear to score at Bendigo first-up and could bring that form to Flemington with only 52kg on his back. MAMBO DANCER (12) led and won her maiden well on debut and could measure up to this. DEMON AWARD (8) raced on the speed to score at Moe and would enjoy soft ground again. WHO DARES (5) was solid again behind a smart type last start and will be around the mark again.

SUGGESTED BET: Legio Ten to win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Midtown Boss $4.20 – $3.40.

RACE 5: 2:10PM RCH STAFF APPRECIATION PLATE (2000m)

Plenty of chances here with a big field engaged. Liked the way OCEANS ABOVE (2) travelled before unleashing a strong turn of foot to win over 1600m last time out but the 2000m might suit him this time. MIDNIGHT LADY (14) broke her maiden over 1800m and should relish 2000m with the limit weight. INNERBLOOM (13) ran soundly at her first run for seven weeks at Bendigo and will be fitter. GOTTABESAVVY (3) found the SA Derby too tough but will be suited back at this level.

SUGGESTED BET: Oceans Above to win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: First Immortal $9 – $5.

RACE 6: 2:45PM HERALD SUN/TRANSURBAN RUN FOR THE KIDA (1400m)

Another big field engaged but BRUNG KING (7) can win again after posting his second win in three starts with a strong effort at Sandown last time out. CASTILLIAN (2) is working up to his best form and won’t be far away again from the inside gate. LOUNGE BAR RUBI (1) was sound when up to this trip last star and is worth considering. QUEEN LATIFA (18) resumed with a win a Cranbourne and might bob up at big odds.

SUGGESTED BET: Brung King to win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Grey River $4.60 – $3.50.

RACE 7: 3:20PM HENLEY AND VILLAWOOD GFA HOUSE PLATE (2000m)

BLUE CUP (5) could go around over the odds after working home well for fourth over 1600m first-up. He’ll thrive over 2000m and is a second-up winner. ROYAL HARD HAT (18) led and won well in heavy ground at Sandown and has earned a crack at this class. KHOEKHOE (6) raced on the speed and kept rolling to score well at Sandown and could do so again. SHAIYHAR (14) showed enough when resuming to suggest he’ll be competitive second-up.

SUGGESTED BET: Blue Cup each-way.

TAB MARKET: Silente Surrente $5.50 – $4.40.

RACE 8: 4:00PM VRC COMMUNITY PLATE (1400m)

KING MAGNUS (1) chased well when scoring at Flemington second-up and will only be improved for that and handles all tracks. TURBEAU (15) impressed when running on well at Bendigo first-up and should be running on well with only 52kg after Celine Gaudray’s claim. MORVADA (8) led and did a good job when not far away over this course last start and should go well. CROSSHAVEN (2) loomed up to win here last start and will be thereabouts.

SUGGESTED BET: King Magnus to win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Jimmy The Bear $7.50 – $6.

RACE 9: 4:35PM VRC & GFA PARTNERSHIP SPRINT (1100m)

RANVEER (4) will tackle this fresh after a luckless run at Mornington in April. The outside of the straight course might be the place to be by the time the last race is run and he’s drawn barrier 16. TREPORTI (2) will also be on the fresh side here but normally races well down the straight. THE HASS (9) won fresh last time in and should perform well first-up. NO DRAMA (14) is lightly raced but has shown enough talent to be worth thought here.

SUGGESTED BET: Ranveer to win.

TAB MARKET MOVER: Ranveer $4.40 – $3.50.
