To reaffirm the strength of European golf following a crushing victory over the United States in the Ryder Cup, check out the front of the betting in this week’s Sony Open, the second and final leg of the Hawaiian Swing.

New Swedish sensation Ludvig Aberg is the 16/1 favourite while Matt Fitzpatrick and Tyrrell Hatton at 18s complete a hat-trick of Europeans at the very top of the market.

Jon Rahm may have headed to LIV but the Euros are still a force to be reckoned with on the PGA Tour.

That said, it was an American, Chris Kirk, who took the opening event, The Sentry, in Maui last week.

He returns with sights on the Hawaiian double while Open champion Brian Harman adds further U.S. class following his tied fifth place at The Sentry.

This event has been a regular stop on the PGA Tour since the mid-60s and Waialae Country Club hosts once more.

It’s a short par 70, features Bermuda greens and can often get windy.

The weather forecast suggests 20mph breezes on Thursday afternoon but winds drop as the week goes on so expect this to be another birdie-fest.

The last three winning scores at the Sony are -18 (Si Woo Kim 2023), -23 (Hideki Matsuyama 2022) and -21 (Kevin Na 2021).

The aforementioned Aberg, Fitzpatrick and Hatton have good chances but, at more than twice the price, preference is for another European, Justin Rose.

Rose struggled to find top gear for the first three rounds at The Sentry last week but then came alive - and then some - by shooting a crazy 12-under 61 on the final day.

He’ll bring that momentum to Waialae Country Club, a place where he was runner-up on his last visit.

That was back in 2017, one of four top 20s in the five tournaments he’s played here.

Rose feels his game is in a good place and the Englishman’s strong approach play and impressive record in early-season PGA Tour events make him an attractive each-way proposition at 40/1 (1/5 odds, first 6) with Spreadex.

Waialae Country has its own quirks and subtleties and that’s why it makes sense to back a proven veteran to get the better of a young first-timer in a 72-hole match bet.

Bet365 gives us that opportunity by pairing Matt Kuchar against Akshay Bhatia and it’s ‘Kooch’ who gets the nod at 5/6.

Kuchar was fourth on his second visit way back in 2002 and his last 10 appearances show a win (2019), a third, two fifths, two sevenths (2022 and 2023), an eighth and a 13th.

This test is right up his street while Sony debutant Bhatia, despite playing well last week, has it all on to keep up with a Kuchar very much in his comfort zone.

Canada’s Corey Conners is a leaderboard regular in this event, making all five cuts and breaking par in 18 of his 20 rounds at Waialae.

His last four finishes here read: 12th, 11th, 12th and third.

On those numbers, he’s a solid bet at 11/4 with bet365 to crack the top 10.
