Tigers vs Royals: Odds, picks and predictions 7/17/23

When Scott Harris was welcomed into the Tigers organization last year to helm the front office, his most consistent message was repeated again and again. Harris stressed that player development and scouting would focus on players who could “control the strike zone.”

On Sunday in Seattle, Detroit failed that task, striking out 10 times while only drawing one walk. The ignominious result was a 2-0 shutout that underscores the flailing problem that afflicts many of Detroit’s batters. That defeat cost the Tigers a sweep, as well as a game in the standings. That may not seem crucial, but the AL Central is ripe for the taking, and even a .500 record would place the Tigers in contention.

Detroit can’t rest on Monday, having traveled by plane late Sunday to get to Missouri where they’ll face the Kansas City Royals. Luckily, the Royals are a last place team with last place talent, and Monday’s game is a good chance for the Tigers to win, and baseball bettors to win too.

  • Moneyline: Tigers -125, Royals +105

  • Total: Over/Under 9.0 Runs (-120/+100)

Matt Manning (3-1, 3.72 ERA, 20 K in 29 IP) vs Jordan Lyles (1-11, 6.42 ERA, 69 K in 96.2 IP)

Here again, comes Matt Manning, in his first start since his no-hitter. Manning appears healthy after his stint on the IL. His fastball and slider were top-notch last start, and he also has Uncle Charlie (his curveball) in his pocket too. That means the Royals will have a rough time on Monday.

The Royals have a team on-base percentage of .293, the lowest team mark in baseball. This is a lineup that swings and misses a lot. Expect Manning to be sharp and effective again.

Detroit’s opponent, Lyles, is a junk baller who keeps the ball over the plate. Unfortunately for him and KC, that ball too often flies over the fence. He’s allowed 20 home runs, but his K rate is among the lowest of any AL starter. That could be welcome news for the Tigers lineup.

  • Expect Miguel Cabrera in the lineup on Monday: the veteran has hit .400 in 15 PA against Lyles
  • Kerry Carpenter has a homer in six PA against the Royals’ starter
  • Zack Short has a home run in 5 PA vs. Lyles
  • KC’s Bobby Witt is 3-for-6 with a double off Manning in his career

Give away 1.5 runs and take the run line (+135) on Detroit from DraftKings. That means if the Tigers win by two runs or more, your $50 bet would win $67.50 from DraftKings.

Our same-game parlay was crafted using the easy-to-use SGP builder from DraftKings Sportsbook. The parlay odds are +800, which means your $100 winning wager nets you $900, including the stake.

  • Tigers win on Moneyline
  • Spencer Torkelson to hit a home run
  • 2+ Spencer Torkelson hits

Detroit has won four of their six games against division-rival Kansas City. In the last three seasons, the series is deadlocked, 22 wins for the Tigers, and 22 for the Royals.
