Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox struggled a bit with the Rival Yankees in the Tuesday doubleheader, losing 3-2 and 4-1 in that pair. After another postponement due to rain we had another doubleheader on Thursday. In game one Boston out-hit the competition 10-6 in a nice 5-0 victory. As for game two the Red Sox crawled back from a 5-2 deficit to tie but never got further in an 8-5 loss. Rafael Devers had three hits and a solo homer in the defeat.

In the starter role for the Friday matchup the Red Sox will go with Brayan Bello. Over his 25 starts this year Bello is 12-8 with a 3.68 ERA and 117 strikeouts over 142.0 innings. Bello is 4-2 with a 3.38 ERA over his last seven starts.

Toronto Blue Jays

Over on the Blue Jays’ side, they lost to the Rangers 10-4, 6-3 and 10-0 in the first three games of their series this week. Toronto was out-hit 12-5 in the blowout loss Wednesday. In the finale the Blue Jays got their only RBI from a Vladimir Guerrero homer in a rough 9-2 loss. Starter Kevin Gausman finished with 4.2 innings and four earned runs.

It’ll be Jose Berrios in the starter role for the Blue Jays on Friday. This year Berrios is 10-10 with a 3.63 ERA over 29 starts. He’s got 160 Ks in 171.0 innings. Berrios is 2-3 with a 4.65 ERA over his last seven starts.

ANDREW’S FREE PICK

I’ll probably stick with the Blue Jays here. Berrios should be able to put the team in a winning position; he’s given up just four earned over his last 13.0 innings over two starts, going 1-0 in that time. Berrios did have a sketchy loss versus Washington to close out August (6.0 innings; five earned) but he’s pitched well since then. On Thursday Toronto had a couple of ugly pitching performances and gave up 12 hits. The Blue Jays have only five combined runs over their last three games, so they’re going to need to punch up the offense in this opener. I think they’ll pull it off.
