Best Picks & Predictions for 2023 Open Championship

The final major championship of 2023 has arrived, with the world’s best converging on Royal Liverpool Golf Club in search for the Claret Jug. The last time this course hosted the Open, Rory McIlroy won the title in 2014. He comes in with a lot of confidence, having finished birdie-birdie to claim this last weekend’s Scottish Open in dramatic style.

The first three champions of the biggest events this year have been Jon Rahm (Masters), Brooks Koepka (PGA Championship) and Wyndham Clark (U.S. Open). Should Koepka win this event, he’ll be three legs through the career grand slam, which would also be the case if Rahm won his first Claret Jug at Hoylake.

2023 British Open Championship Odds

Following the favorite Rory McIlroy is Scottie Scheffler, who has two victories on the campaign, and he comes in with seven straight top-5’s. 2023 Masters champ Jon Rahm is the third choice, with defending champion Cameron Smith at four. Brooks Koepka and Viktor Hovland round out the top-six players on the betting board.

Jon Rahm Sporting Intriguing Odds

2023 Masters champ Jon Rahm has eye opening odds at +1200 to win outright. That’s nearly double that of Rory McIlroy, which means you’re getting the fiery Spaniard at great value. After winning the Green Jacket, he had a middling PGA, but then just two starts ago, had a top-10 at the U.S. Open. For the season, he’s put together an impressive list of ‘strokes gained’ stats, as he ranks second in total strokes gained and third tee-to-green.

Jon Rahm’s Strokes Gained Stats Last 36 Rounds

Just two years ago, Rahm was a part of the conversation at the Open, where he wound up in a tie for third. Given his success at this championship, and the fact he has racked up four titles in 2023, his +1200 odds are still very much digestible to win his third career major title.

Past Five British Open Championship Winners

There was no 2020 championship due to COVID-19.

  1. Viktor Hovland (+2000): Viktor Hovland has been knocking on the door more and more in the bigger tournaments. Last year, he was in the final group on Sunday at the Open, before winding up T-4th. Then in 2023, he’s been T-3rd at the Players, T-7th at the Masters, T-2nd at the PGA, then had a top-20 at the U.S. Open. In the last 24 rounds, he’s in the top-10 in several ‘strokes gained’ categories like total strokes gained, tee-to-green, and ball striking.
  2. Bryson DeChambeau (+5500): After prolonged struggles with his game, Bryson DeChambeau has been playing much better of late. He’s coming in with nothing worse than a T-11 in his last four LIV starts (including a runner-up). The ‘Mad Scientist’ also was T-4th at the PGA Championship and T-20th at the U.S. Open this year.
  3. Adam Scott (+8000): In his last six events, Adam Scott has made five cuts, with three top-10’s and five top-30’s. In his career, Scott has amassed five top-10’s at the Open, and was T-15th a year ago. He’ll be an interesting name in the top 10/20 markets.
