Best U.S. Open Prop Bets 2023

The third major championship of the season begins Thursday with the best golfers in the world gathering at Los Angeles Country Club for the 2023 U.S. Open. Sportsbook Review betting analyst Neil Parker has checked out the markets across our best sports betting apps and shares his thoughts and U.S. Open prop bets.

Is the third time a charm for the U.S. Open betting favorite Scottie Scheffler?

While he came up short at the first two major championships of the year, the 26-year-old American is atop the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and poised to take a serious run at winning the FedEx Cup while listed as this week's betting favorite by the U.S. Open odds.

We’ll probably have to wait until Sunday afternoon before we know Scheffler’s fate, but there’s no questioning the endless supply of U.S. Open prop bets available to enhance the entertainment value of the storied tournament while also boosting your bankroll.

Our best U.S. Open prop bets also serve as a perfect companion to our U.S. Open picks and U.S. Open sleeper picks.

Top Scandinavian: Viktor Hovland (-200 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

With Hovland improving his work around the greens and actually gaining strokes instead of gifting them away across his past 20 measured rounds, I’m bullish about his potential to post a fourth consecutive strong showing in a major championship and have him high in my U.S. Open power rankings.

Hovland’s main competition in this betting market is Alex Noren, and the veteran Swede has missed the cut in five consecutive majors and four of his past six PGA Tour events. Jens Dantorp is the only other Scandinavian in the field with major championship experience, and that was a missed cut at the 2018 Open Championship.

Top Japanese: Hideki Matsuyama (-250 via PointsBet) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This prop is incredibly similar to the Hovland nod.

Matsuyama is by far the best Japanese golfer in the field, and he’s made seven consecutive cuts with four top-20 finishes dating back to The Players Championship in March. Add ranking tenth in strokes gained: tee-to-green and ninth in SG: around-the-green in this field across his past 20 measured rounds, and Matsuyama stands to play the weekend at LACC.

Making the cut might be all it takes, too. Ryo Ishikawa has missed consecutive cuts in June on the Japan Golf Tour, and Yuto Katsuragawa and Ryutaro Nagano have each only played a single major championship.

Top-20 finish: Tyrrell Hatton (+125 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐

I’m encouraged by Hatton’s well-rounded game and current form. He’s gained strokes off the tee and on the greens in six consecutive events and carded a top-20 finish in each one. We’re also landing an outlier number through FanDuel.

This prop is trading as low as +100 through Caesars, so landing the +125 number presents a positive expected value of 13%.

U.S. Open hole-in-one prop bets

The hole-in-one prop for the U.S. Open is a simple two-way market with a Yes and No side.

There are five par 3s at Los Angeles Country Club:

  • Hole 4 (228 yards)
  • Hole 7 (284 yards)
  • Hole 9 (171 yards)
  • Hole 11 (290 yards)
  • Hole 15 (124 yards)

It’s also worth noting Hole 6 is a 330-yard Par 4, which a number of players could opt to attempt to drive – especially if it plays shorter at any point during the tournament.

DraftKings and FanDuel also have markets to bet on an individual player to card a hole-in-one.

U.S. Open wire-to-wire winner props

Winning a golf tournament wire-to-wire means the same golfer led the tournament following each of the four rounds of play. There have been eight wire-to-wire winners in U.S. Open history, and another nine golfers have been a wire-to-wire winner while sharing the lead at the conclusion of one or more rounds of the tournament.

DraftKings has the Yes wire-to-wire winner prop priced at +1200 in a one-way market, while FanDuel has wire-to-wire odds available for individual players.

U.S. Open cut line props

Our best sportsbooks feature a pair of markets involving the cut line ahead of the U.S. Open. Each individual golfer has their own odds for whether or not they’ll make the cut.

Will there be a playoff props

The U.S. Open has required a playoff 33 times. It’s now a sudden-death format, and the last time there was a playoff needed to determine the winner was in 2008 when Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate on the first playoff hole.

The playoff prop for the U.S. Open is another two-way market with Yes and No sides.

DraftKings also has playoff markets available with props for whether it will be a three-man playoff (+1100) or a four-or-more-man playoff (+6500).

U.S. Open nationality props

The U.S. Open field is loaded with international talents, and nationality prop markets offer opportunities for bettors to wager on collections of players from different countries, continents, and regions of the world.

DraftKings and FanDuel each offer unique nationality betting markets for who will win the U.S. Open.

U.S. Open props betting tips

Even with the U.S. Open annually switching courses, the common theme of tough conditions has become the norm, and Los Angeles Country Club is expected to be another demanding test.

The par-70 track can extend to 7,423 yards, so adding hard and lightning fast greens to thick and challenging rough projects to make for difficult scoring conditions. Of course, there will also be a splash of major-championship pressure, so players are going to need to be firing on all cylinders to be successful this week.
