Tuesday Glorious Goodwood Betting Tips

1:40 Goodwood Tips

Lord Riddiford – 1pt Each Way – 9/2 (Bet365, Paddy Power, Betfair & Others – 4 places)

singleSelection

My first selection of Glorious Goodwood comes in the opening race, the 5f Coral Handicap

Lord Riddiford loves Goodwood and loves this race too. He is 3/4 at the track with two of those wins coming in this exact race in 2021 and 2022. Those two wins came off marks of 88 and 87 with completely different underfoot conditions each time, with the 2021 race on Soft and the 2022 race on Good. Therefore, you would have to give him an outstanding chance off 84 today with the ground currently Good to Soft, as you know it is a winnable mark and he handles the ground regardless of how it ends up.

He is 8 now and he has been out of form but his season is likely revolving around today and it’s not like he went into either previous renewal in good form either. With horses like this that are targeting one race, they need to be seen to be in poor form in order to bring their handicap mark down. In 2021 his three runs leading up to the race were 050 and in 2022, it was 676. So, the lack of recent form does not concern me at all.

It is a tough ask to win the same race three years in a row and it’ll be even tough from Stall 15. However, off this mark, over this course and distance, it’ll take a good one to be beating him if he turns up at his best. He is just shy of an each way price really but I’m happy to play each way here at 9/2, as if he is beat, I cannot see him being beaten far.

Giavellotto – 1pt Each Way – 16/1 (Bet365, Paddy Power, Betfair – 3 places)

singleSelection

My second selection comes in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes, which is the 2m Group 1 on today’s card.

This is a fascinating race where Courage Mon Ami and Coltrane reoppose one another after their clash in the Ascot Gold Cup last month, after finishing 1 and 2. At 7/4 and 4/1, I feel they are short enough in a wide-open race. Especially Courage Mon Ami who is unproven on ground with some give in it.

I have gone for a value selection here at 18/1 and that is Giavellotto who I feel has a better chance than his current price suggests. His trip over to Dubai did not go to plan and he was drawn badly, so I’m happy to draw a line through that. His first UK run as a 4-year-old impressed me a great deal at York as he won pretty cosily. He looked a much stronger and streetwise animal than what we had seen last year. Over 1m6f on Good to Firm ground, he took a while to get going but once he was motoring, he looked the winner from some way out.

The form from the race is mixed with Eldar Eldarov and Broome struggle at Ascot since. However, the 4 horse Quickthorn won at York next time out beating Israr. Israr then went to Newmarket and beat Adayar. So that element of the form seems to be working out very nicely.

Whilst many of these went to Royal Ascot, connections of Giavellotto have been patient with their horse and bypassed Royal Ascot to come here with a fresh horse and I think their patience could well be rewarded. When a few may be looking to throw in the towel, particularly those feely the effects of their Ascot Gold Cup run, he’ll just be hitting top gear and motoring home. I think he has a great chance of finishing in the mix and we don’t know fully what he is capable, he may well be up to winning this.
