Glorious Goodwood Day 2 Tips

Wednesday will be day two of the five-day flat racing festival that goes by the name of Glorious Goodwood. Can we find any winners on day two at the West Sussex venue?

It wasn’t easy on the first day, as is often the case at these hugely competitive top meetings, and day two is unlikely to present punters with a simple task either. However, we’re here to push through and see if we can unearth a few worthwhile bets, so let’s get stuck in.

Glorious Goodwood Day 2 Betting Tips

Ahead of the second day, here are a trio of runners that look well worth taking at the early prices:

1.50 – Coral Handicap

The opening race on Wednesday is the Coral Handicap, which is run over one mile and four furlongs. Amleto will undoubtedly be well fancied after winning on seasonal reappearance for powerful connections, though at bigger odds, I’m drawn to Fox Journey, who should really appreciate the conditions and who arrives here having pointed to better days ahead when winning last time out.

Sir Michael Stoute’s colt won very nicely indeed on soft ground at Newmarket, showing himself to be too good for Class 4 company in the process, something that he’s recently proved for a second time. His best form remains that effort on seasonal debut on soft ground, so it’s a big plus that he’ll be returning to a soft surface here. The handicapper has of course hit him with a rise in the weights for that win last time out, but he did it a shade comfortably, so don’t be surprised if he can handle the extra weight for a trainer who has won this race three times before.

Best Bet – Fox Journey (each-way) @ 7/1

4.10 – British EBF 40th Anniversay Alice Keppel Fillies’ Conditions Stakes

At ten past four, we have a conditions race for fillies only, and as far as I’m concerned, there’s only one serious play here. Ahead of day one, I put this one up at 12/1 as one of the best bets across the whole meeting and I’m standing firm. There has been some support, so the 12/1 is all gone, but even at 10’s, Beenham is well worth supporting.

After making an encouraging debut to finish a staying-on third at Bath after dwelling at the back, the filly improved markedly to land the spoils over this course and distance, winning nicely on good-to-soft. She ran on in a very likable way on that occasion, finishing in front of none other than Haatem, who just yesterday landed a Group 2 contest at Goodwood. That is form that should be taken very, very seriously indeed.

There was plenty of promise attached to her run at Newbury last time out. She finished sixth (of 20), staying on well when not ideally placed. That was a hugely competitive event and the form should not be discounted. This race contains a little less depth, so I would not at all be surprised to see the unexposed two-year-old go closer. At 10’s, she’s a very easy each-way selection for my money.

Best Bet – Beenham (each-way) @ 10/1

4.45 – British European Breeders Fund EBF Fillies’ Handicap

In the penultimate race on day two, we have another contest for fillies only. There are lots to consider here. La Isla Mujeres arrives here seeking a hat-trick and the in-form three-year-old warrants lots of respect for the in-form Ralph Beckett team, while Roger Varian’s Decoration is another who cannot be discounted.

However, at much chunkier odds, In These Shoes is the one to be on as far as I’m concerned. Charlie Johnston’s filly won nicely on seasonal debut, relishing the softer surface over seven and a half furlongs at Beverley. She looked to want to further occasion, so it is a bit of a surprise that it has taken this long for the step up in trip to be made, but the Johnston yard has a very good record at Goodwood, so this could be the perfect time to test her stamina.

She wasn’t with it last time out, but there was plenty to like about her second at Newmarket before that. She finished ahead of some decent horses, again performing as though she would relish a greater test on stamina. That’s exactly what she gets here and I think she’s well worthy of each-way support for a yard that holds that incredibly promising strike rate at this venue.
