Victor Wembanyama Odds & Props

Victor Wembanyama's scoring has been up-and-down so far in his young career, so our NBA prop picks are zoning in on the Spurs phenom's transcendent defense for tonight's best bet.

The alien has landed.

We’re just two weeks into the Victor Wembanyama experience, and, from a purely aesthetic viewpoint, it’s been an incredible ride so far.

It’s been a little trickier putting his work into the realm of NBA odds, including Wednesday when Gotham gets its first look at the top pick of the 2023 NBA Draft.

Let’s see what new realms Victor Wembanyama odds will explore for Spurs vs Knicks, as I seek the best bet in a spotlight of NBA player props.

Victor Wembanyama NBA prop pick

Over 3.5 steals and blocks

The 7’4” Frenchman is just 19 years old, and he’s nowhere near the product he’s going to be once he hits his prime. When that happens, have mercy on us all.

His offensive output fluctuates, as it does for most rookies. After scoring 29 points combined in games against the Clippers and Suns, he followed that up by lighting Phoenix on fire in the second game of that home-and-home set, to the tune of 38 points, 10 boards, two dimes, and two blocks

While we wait for that part of his game to round out, it’s fun watching him wreak havoc on the defensive end. There is no other player in the league who can deter paint drives that easily and block three-point shots.

Watching someone block a 3-point attempt is already unicorn-ish, but it’s mind-boggling watching him race to closeout from the paint to beyond arc — the ground that man covers! — to even contest.

Very rarely would I ever target this best bet on defense, but for Wemby? I’m going to enjoy the hell out of watching him try to chase down that steals and blocks number.

He’s had multiple blocks in four of his six games on the year, the best so far being five swats in a game against Toronto, where he also happened to chip in 20 points (with a pair of triples), nine boards, four assists, and a steal.

In fact, Wembanyama has at least one steal in all but one game so far in the season.

He has totaled at least three blocks and steals combined in five of six games so far this season and had at least four combined in half his contests.

I think he unleashes that part of his game in his first-ever stop at Madison Square Garden, to oohs and awes from a stunned Garden audience. He’s getting plus odds on that, too.

Prop: Victor Wembanyama Over 3.5 steals and blocks (+125 at bet365)

Victor Wembanyama NBA same-game parlay

Wembanyama Over 3.5 steals and blocks

Wembanyama Under 2.5 3-pointers

Wembanyama Over 2.5 turnovers

Wemby has already shown his long-distance range.

Granted, he’s just shooting 32.4% on the year from three, but since hitting three of his first 13 attempts in his first three games, VW has hit at least two triples in four straight, connecting at an impressive 40.9% clip.

His best effort in that stretch was when he dropped 38 on Phoenix, drilling 3-for-6 from distance. In his career debut, Wemby went 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, part of a 15-point, five-rebound, two-assist, two-steal opening act.

Despite getting absolutely shelled in a 152-111 obliteration at the hands of the Pacers, Wembanyama still posted his third double-double of the year, with 13 points and 10 rebounds, which included a 2-for-5 mark from the land beyond.

I’ll gladly take the L if he suddenly hits 8-for-13 in this one, but for now, this is a team that is shooting 35.1% from 3-point range collectively, good for 16th. I see more of the same Wednesday.

If there’s one element of his game that needs to be cleaned up, it’s taking care of the ball. Gregg Popovich loathes turnovers, and I’m sure it’s been a point of emphasis as they develop him.

Wemby was a turnover machine in his first four games, with 19 overall, and at least five cough-ups in three of those contests.

Such is the growing pains of handing reps to a guy who will be the main facilitator of the Spurs’ offense (eventually), without an impactful setup man on the roster to ease the burden.

They do have Tre Jones, but he’s a backup, and the team is trying to develop Jeremy Sochan into their point-forward to run alongside their prized possession.

To his credit, Wembanyama has gotten the turnovers under control, albeit in a small sample, as he’s had two turnovers in three straight games.

But the Knicks are ninth in the NBA in forcing turnovers, and they’re not doing it against subpar talent.

In their 111-97 win against the Clippers last game, New York forced Kawhi, PG, James Harden, and Russ Westbrook into 15 turnovers. Prior to that, despite a 110-105 loss to the Bucks, they forced Giannis and Dame to cough it over 11 times between them.

Look for New York to work over the rookie and lift those TOs above the 2.5 total.
