2023 British Open odds, picks, field, date: Surprising PGA predictions by model that has called 9 majors

Once again, Rory McIlroy found himself near the top of the leaderboard on the final day of a major championship at the U.S. Open in June. And once again, the 34-year-old from Northern Ireland was unable to hoist the major trophy. He has finished in the top 10 in each major appearance over the last two years, outside of missing the cut at this year's Masters. The 2023 Open Championship will be McIlroy's final chance this calendar year to win his first major since 2014 after winning four majors from 2011-2014.

McIlroy will have fond memories when he tees off at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Merseyside, England on Thursday, July 20. His last major victory came on that course at the 2014 Open Championship with a 17-under par. McIlroy is listed at 9-1 in the 2023 Open Championship odds on Caesars Sportsbook. Jon Rahm is the 15-2 favorite at the Open and Scottie Scheffler has 9-1 odds to win the Open Championship 2023. Before locking in any 2023 Open Championship picks, be sure to see the 2023 Open Championship predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since that point, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. And at the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scottie Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, the model included Nick Taylor in its best bets to win the 2023 RBC Canadian Open. That bet hit at +7000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,900. McClure's best bets also included Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, even though he hadn't won a PGA Tour event since 2018.

This same model has also nailed a whopping nine majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2023 Open Championship field is taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected 2023 Open Championship leaderboard.

Top 2023 Open Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Open Championship 2023: Jordan Spieth, a three-time major champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles at Royal Liverpool and doesn't even crack the top 10. Spieth is a proven winner on the PGA Tour, having racked up 13 career victories, which includes winning the Open Championship in 2017 at Royal Birkdale.

However, the 29-year-old has struggled mightily in recent weeks. Spieth has missed the cut three times since the start of May, which includes missing the weekend at the U.S. Open. His struggles can be directly attributed to his inability to find the fairway off the tee. Spieth ranks 88th in total driving (193) and 137th in driving accuracy (55.85%). He's not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the Open Championship 2023 field. See which golfers to fade here.

Another surprise: Tyrrell Hatton, a 28-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. He has finished in the top 15 in six of his last seven tournaments, including tied for third at the Wells Fargo Championship and RBC Canadian Open.

The 31-year-old native of England will have the advantage of playing in his home country for a change. The Open has been one of Hatton's best majors throughout his career and he finished tied for 11th in last year's tournament in Scotland. He also finished tied for fifth in 2016 and tied for sixth in 2019 in the Open Championship. Hatton is in the midst of a strong statistical season, ranking third on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained, including fifth in putting, 10th tee-to-green and 11th off-the-green. He is still seeking his first major victory but with his success at the Open Championship and the fact it's being played in his home country this year, Hatton at 28-1 odds to win is one to strongly consider. See who else to pick here
