2023 British Open odds, golf picks, field, date: Surprising PGA predictions by model that has nailed 9 majors

Royal Liverpool Golf Club will host for the 13th time when the 2023 Open Championship returns to the legendary venue on Thursday, July 20. The last two winners at Royal Liverpool were Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods, while other legends to conquer the course in an Open Championship include Walter Hagen, Bobby Jones and J.H. Taylor. McIlroy took a six-shot lead into the final round in 2014 and coasted to a two-shot win over Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia. Can you trust him to overcome a talented 2023 Open Championship field?

McIlroy is 9-1 in the 2023 Open Championship odds from Caesars Sportsbook along with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. However, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm is the 15-2 favorite among the 2023 Open Championship contenders. Before locking in any 2023 Open Championship picks, be sure to see the 2023 Open Championship predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since that point, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. And at the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scottie Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, the model included Nick Taylor in its best bets to win the 2023 RBC Canadian Open. That bet hit at +7000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,900. McClure's best bets also included Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, even though he hadn't won a PGA Tour event since 2018.

This same model has also nailed a whopping nine majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2023 Open Championship field is taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected 2023 Open Championship leaderboard.

Top 2023 Open Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Open Championship 2023: Jordan Spieth, a three-time major champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles at Royal Liverpool and doesn't even crack the top 10. Spieth is a proven winner on the PGA Tour, having racked up 13 career victories, which includes winning the Open Championship in 2017 at Royal Birkdale.

However, the 29-year-old has struggled mightily in recent weeks. Spieth has missed the cut three times since the start of May, which includes missing the weekend at the U.S. Open. His struggles can be directly attributed to his inability to find the fairway off the tee. Spieth ranks 88th in total driving (193) and 137th in driving accuracy (55.85%). He's not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the Open Championship 2023 field. See which golfers to fade here.

Another surprise: Xander Schauffele, a 25-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The No. 6 player in the Official World Golf Ranking extended his made cuts streak to 27 events with a 19th-place finish at the Travelers Championship.

Schauffele has also finished top-25 in his last nine worldwide starts and has five top-10 finishes during that span. The seven-time PGA Tour winner has already had six top-five finishes in major 25 career major championship starts with 11 top-10s and 18 top-25s as well. Schauffele ranks sixth on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained this season (1.993) and is top-10 in putting (.704) and approaching the green (.927). See who else to pick here
