Atlanta and Pittsburgh play the third of 4 games on Wednesday night, and the first 2 games have been dramatic. On Monday, the Pirates knocked Strider out of the game early and then barely held off a late charge from the Braves. On Tuesday, they could not hold off the Braves, as Atlanta plated 3 runs in the 9th to win. The Braves are once again heavy favorites on Thursday, maybe with less drama. It is worth noting, however, that Ronald Acuna took a pitch off his left elbow last night, and he is likely to miss tonight’s game.

We’ve reached the point in the season where lines are sometimes unplayable. Unless you think the Pirates will win tonight (and I do not), the Money Line is too heavily juiced to play. Even the Run Line is a gross -170. Instead, I am pivoting to the game total. I like this game to stay under, and Max Fried is going to help us. Fried returned from the IL last week, and in his first start back, he got along just fine: 6 innings, 3 hits, no walks, 8 Ks, and most importantly, no runs allowed. And he did that on a very efficient 72 pitches. I’ll be happy to back him again tonight. The Pirates are throwing Quinn Priester. He has been shaky in 4 Major League starts, and he is going to give up some damage, but there is promise in the midst of his growing pains. The Atlanta lineup is still stacked even if Acuna misses the game, but it’s a long way to 10 runs. I think between having Fried on the mound and the likely absence of Acuna, this game should trend toward the under.
