The Houston Astros head to Detroit for the weekend to face the Tigers. The Tigers have been a pesky bunch lately, as they have lots of young, promising players who are all coming of age at about the same time. They have given fits to some good teams over the past month. The defending champs find themselves in a dogfight for the AL West, as they and the Mariners are both a game back of the Rangers in a 3-way heat. Houston can’t afford any mistakes.

The money line in this game feels like a trap either way you play it. It is priced heavily toward the Astros as one would expect, but it is also priced as if Framber Valdez was in good form and he is not. Valdez has really struggled over the past few weeks, giving up 6 runs in 3 of his last 5 starts. He could snap out of that funk at any minute, but this game is priced as if he were in Cy Young form. Likewise, it is hard to justify betting Detroit behind Matt Manning. He has put together a couple of strong starts in a row, but I wouldn’t want to bet on him slowing down the Astros while they are locked in a pennant race. Besides, even if Valdez struggles and Detroit has an early lead, it is hard to trust the Detroit bullpen. For me, the best play in this one is on the game total. There is a strong chance that Valdez will give up some runs, and it seems likely that Manning will too. While the Houston bullpen could post some late zeroes if they are ahead, the Tigers bullpen is too vulnerable to trust. I’ll bet on offense tonight.
