The Angels and Mariners will be in a dogfight all weekend in LA. Last night, Seattle stole a win in the first game of the series with a 4-run 9th inning. I look for Seattle to carry that momentum into Friday and pick up a second straight win.

We have two high-K pitchers taking the mound on Friday, and the books expect a low-scoring game as a result. Luis Castillo is famously great after the all-star break, and he has pitched his ERA all the way down to 2.88. He is seeing the Angels for the 3rd time this season, but not since June 9th, and a lot has changed in the Halos’ lineup since then. Expect a lot of zeros on the board for Castillo. The Angels will turn to Reid Detmers. The lefty is having an effective season, although his numbers don’t always look like it. There are days when Detmers is completely untouchable, and Seattle is near the bottom of the league when it comes to hitting lefties. Detmers seems to be in a good spot tonight too. I expect both of these starters to turn in excellent performances.

The glaring difference between these two teams is the bullpen. Seattle boasts the 2nd lowest bullpen ERA in the league, while the Angels are one of the worst bullpens, as evidenced by last night’s collapse. I expect this game to be tight early, with Seattle stealing it again in the late innings.
