Baltimore came back over the weekend to win a series against surging Seattle. The Orioles are in 1st place in the AL East to start the week, and with Tampa Bay fading it looks like they might win the division running away. I keep thinking the Orioles are going to fade but there is no evidence of it. Even though their starting pitching is light on paper, they are actually 10th in quality starts this season. San Diego has invested a ton into this season and has little to show for it. The Mariners just can’t ever get anything going, with the latest example a series loss to Arizona over the weekend. The rest of the month is difficult too as their next 4 series are all against teams over .500. Baltimore is the best of that group, so turning things around to start the week is going to be tough.
While Baltimore’s young hitters have been thriving, they have not as much success with their pitching. You can see why there is so much hype around rookie Grayson Rodriguez, but the results have not followed yet. It is a small sample size but he has been more effective on the road. Meanwhile, veteran Yu Darvish is part of the problem for San Diego. The big righty is not having the season he did a year ago. His walk and hit rates are up while his K numbers are down. That is not a winning combination. As an underdog the Orioles have a winning record this season, and they are also winning more on the road than at home. Combine that with the fact they are 9-6 in Rodriguez’s starts, despite his struggles, and they are a nice value play tonight. They are the better team and have been all season.
