San Francisco Giants vs Atlanta Braves predictions

After sweeping the Yankees and making it look easy in the process, the Atlanta Braves continue their 3-series home stand against the San Francisco Giants tonight. Cy Young hopeful Spencer Strider gets the start for Atlanta while Alex Cobb will be on the bump for the visitors. The Braves certainly have the edge on the mound as Strider posts a 3.75 ERA and 1.12 WHIP paired with a 3.08 xERA and 2.87 xFIP. There is a reason he’s in contention for one of baseball’s most prestigious awards, falling in the 90th percentile or better in xBA, chase rate and K% with a league-leading 14.02 K/9. He had a bad stretch recently but looked back to being the best version of himself last time out, surrendering 0 runs and only 3 hits in 7 innings pitched. 

This is another solid opportunity for Strider to put in a quality start against a struggling offense. Over the last 30 days, these teams are on the exact opposite side of the table. While the Braves rank 1st in BA (.287), OPS (.894) and wRC+ (137), the Giants are dead last in each of those categories; the worst of all is their wRC+ of 66. Cobb has been one of the better arms for San Francisco this year, but I simply don’t think he has the stuff to tame this beast of an Atlanta lineup. Cobb posts a 3.62 ERA though it’s likely to continue rising as both his recent performances and 4.69 xERA suggest. He has an 8.29 ERA over his last three starts and has struggled on the road this season with a 4.96 ERA away from home yet a 2.25 ERA at Oracle Park. 

All in all, this is a rather straightforward pick. This is the best team in baseball on an 8-2 run in their last 10. Give me the Braves to get another comfortable win at home and cover the run line.
