The Pirates have been plundering bettors’ scorecards for a solid week now, as they split 4-game sets with both the Braves and the Brewers prior to this series with Cincinnati. Even in the losses they often did it by a single run, catching people who bet the run line. The Reds, however, had no such issues last night, as they blasted the Pirates 9-2. Neither team used its better bullpen arms, and it was a welcome day of rest for both bullpens that have been heavily worked lately. Those arms are likely to come out tonight, and if this game does not feature a lot of early runs and stays close, a live bet under might look good.
This game is listed as essentially a pick ’em, and I like the Reds to grab the win despite the recent form of the Pirates. I give the advantage to the Reds in the early innings in particular, as they will start Brandon Williamson. Aside from a bad outing in Chicago recently (which has happened to a lot of people since the All-Star break), Williamson has given us 5 or 6 innings of work and 2 or fewer runs in 4 of his last 5 starts. The Pirates, on the other hand, are having a bullpen game. They are listing Thomas Hatch as the primary pitcher, and he logged 4 innings against the Braves just 2 days ago. I doubt that happens again, but maybe this is the plan for him in Pittsburgh; this was, after all, his first appearance with the Pirates, and he was just a run-of-the-mill bullpen arm in Toronto before that. How much confidence are you willing to place in a guy that Toronto moved before the deadline when they are in the heat of a playoff chase? I expect a shorter outing from tonight, and much more of a group effort from the Pittsburgh pen. The Reds should have an advantage in the early innings, and with a well-rested bullpen, hopefully they can avoid any late collapses.
