MLB Parlay Piece for May 23, 2023

Gerrit Cole Less Than 18.5 Outs Recorded

Gerrit Cole has been magnificent to begin 2023, but his 2.01 ERA is significantly better than his 3.58 xERA, and his 3.00 FIP, suggesting that there is likely to be at least some negative regression coming his way sooner rather than later. Through 10 turns in the rotation this year, Cole owns a 7.9% walk rate, which is his highest rate of allowing free passes since 2018. His relatively poor command has contributed to his worst WHIP since 2017, back when he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates. During the month of May, Cole has failed to eclipse this market number in any of his four trips to the mound. Expect that trend to continue tonight against the Baltimore Orioles, which rank in the top-12 in OPS and ISO against right-handed pitching across the last three weeks.

Rich Hill Less Than 4.5 Strikeouts

During the month of May, the Texas Rangers have the sixth-lowest strikeout percentage against left-handed pitching of any team in baseball, punching out in only 18.9% of their plate appearances. Rich Hill had been moderately impressive of late, with at least five strikeouts in five of his last six turns through the rotation. However, that trend likely gets a ding tonight against a high-contact opponent that has not struck out more than five times against any southpaw in the last three weeks.

Adam Wainwright Less Than 4.0 Strikeouts

Adam Wainwright gets a favorable matchup tonight against the Cincinnati Reds, but he will still likely have difficulty recording many swings and misses. In three starts to begin the year, Wainwright owns a 5.74 ERA, 8.44 xERA, and a 4.88 FIP. He has recorded only three total strikeouts across his last 10.2 innings of work, with a dismal 2.2% swinging-strike rate in that span. Cincinnati ranks 25th in strikeout percentage against right-handed pitching since May 1, which is the only reason this market number is not south of a flat four.

Masataka Yoshida Less Than 0.5 hitter Strikeouts

We are stealing this play from our main slate article to include in this parlay. Masataka Yoshida combines strong contact skills with elite plate discipline to avoid strikeouts at an impressive clip. Today, he gets a matchup against Griffin Canning. Canning has an unimpressive 14.3% strikeout rate against left-handed hitters this season, not to mention a .333 opponent batting average and a 5.01 FIP. Expect Yoshida to have a strong day at the dish and for him to make contact in each of his trips to the plate.
