MLB Parlay Piece for May 31, 2023

Louie Varland 4+ strikeouts (-250)

Prior to being called up to the big leagues this year, Louie Varland posted an incredulous 40.3% strikeout rate at AAA across 15.0 innings of work. Since being promoted, Varland has totaled at least four strikeouts in five of his six starts, with the one exception being a tough matchup against the high-contact Toronto Blue Jays. Tonight, Varland gets a slightly more favorable matchup against the Houston Astros, which rank 10th in strikeout percentage against right-handed pitching across the last month of action. Expect Varland to do his job as part of this parlay.

Hunter Brown u7.5 strikeouts (-150)

In terms of matchup, Hunter Brown seemingly could not get a more favorable opponent in terms of strikeouts. Since May 1, the Minnesota Twins have struck out more against right-handed pitchers than any other offense in baseball. Still, they rank fourth in walk rate, meaning that they are having very few quick plate appearances. Brown, who struggles to pound the strike zone with any sense of consistency, could be short-lived in this contest if Minnesota is able to quickly elevate his pitch count with extended innings. The under is the smart move here.

Byron Buxton 4+ total bases (+320)

When Hunter Brown makes mistakes, it’s usually to right-handed batters. In 2023, Brown has allowed a .282 opponent batting average to right-handed hitters, with three of the four home runs he has allowed also coming from this side of the platoon split. Byron Buxton has been underwhelming to begin the new campaign, with a .221 batting average. However, he still has 10 home runs and nine doubles through his first 49 games played. Facing right-handed pitching, Buxton owns an .820 OPS and a 128 wRC+. There is power potential here. Do not underestimate Buxton’s ability to make a young pitcher pay for a mistake over the middle of the plate.
