Blue Jays odds vs. Red Sox July 2: Toronto favoured behind Gausman in series finale

The Toronto Blue Jays aim to avoid another sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox.

The pregame narrative: Toronto’s offence was quiet for the first 15 innings of this series, scoring just two runs. It arrived a little too late during Saturday’s 6-5 loss, but with a major pitching advantage for Sunday’s contest, the Blue Jays are favourites in the series finale.

Blue Jays vs. Red Sox preview

The good news is there’s only one division in MLB causing Toronto some trouble. The bad news is it’s the AL East.

The Blue Jays fell to 0-6 against Boston on Saturday and 7-19 against their division as a whole. Versus the rest of the league, they’re 38-20.

They have an excellent chance at stealing the series finale, however, with ace Kevin Gausman on the mound.

Gausman owns a 3.01 ERA this year and has some seriously nasty swing-and-miss stuff, ranking second in the majors with 139 strikeouts.

He’s coming off one of his best starts of the season, too, fanning 12 across six innings of one-run ball against the San Francisco Giants.

The Red Sox are sending Garrett Whitlock to the bump and he isn’t enjoying much success this year.

He has a 5.15 ERA and is coming off his worst start of the season. Whitlock allowed six runs through 4.2 innings in a 10-1 loss to the Miami Marlins his last time out.

Toronto has won seven of Gausman’s last eight starts.

Blue Jays prop markets

George Springer stayed hot with his performance on Saturday.

The Blue Jays outfielder had three hits, including a solo home run to begin the day. He has now topped 1.5 total bases in five of his last seven games with four extra-base hits during this stretch.

After going hitless in his last two games, Bo Bichette delivered a double and a homer on Canada Day. He has topped his total bases prop line in nine of his last 15 outings.

Gausman, meanwhile, has failed to record 19 outs in each of his last four starts. He’s gone under 7.5 strikeouts in three of his last four appearances.
