Kentucky Derby trail: Muth, Locked lead 22 Friday workers

Muth, who won the Grade 2 San Vicente in his last start, returned to the work tab Friday for the first time since that win. He worked four furlongs on the Santa Anita dirt in 48.6 seconds. The Bob Baffert trainee, a 27-1 best price in Las Vegas futures for the Kentucky Derby, would have to move to an eligible trainer by Jan. 29 to remain eligible for the run for the roses.

Locked, a 20-1 best price in Kentucky Derby futures in Las Vegas, also drilled Friday morning. Most recently third behind Fierceness and Muth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Friday's work at Palm Beach Downs was the Todd Pletcher trainee's sixth since his last race. According to a Churchill Downs news release on Wednesday, Locked is scheduled to make his 3-year-old debut in the Sam F. Davis (G3) on Feb. 10 at Tampa Bay Downs.

Bartholdy (Mendelssohn) worked five furlongs in 1:00.0 at Santa Anita on Friday morning. It was the eighth fastest of 44 works at the distance. His previous work was five days ago going five furlongs at Santa Anita. In his last start he placed third in a maiden race going one mile on the main track at Del Mar on Nov. 10 for trainer Simon Callaghan.

Bergen (Liam's Map) worked four furlongs in 48.2 seconds at Belmont Park on Friday morning. It was the second fastest of 122 works at the distance.
