Tuesday tab: Swale winner General Jim is back at work

General Jim, winner of the Grade 3 Swale in his last start but scratched from the Fountain of Youth (G2), worked three furlongs for trainer Shug McGaughey Tuesday at Gulfstream Park.

He worked once after the Feb. 4 Swale but then developed a cough ahead of the Fountain of Youth, which was won by Forte, the top choice in Derby futures at 3-1.

McGaughey told Daily Racing Form that General Jim is off the Derby trail because of missing training and that he might return in the Pat Day Mile (G2) on the Kentucky Derby undercard.

General Jim was one of nine-graded stakes winners with published works Tuesday.

General Jim (Into Mischief), a Grade 3 winner (2023 Claiborne Farm Swale), worked three furlongs in 38.5 seconds at Gulfstream Park on Tuesday morning. It was the fourth fastest of four works at the distance. His previous work was 31 days ago going four furlongs at Gulfstream Park. In his last start he won the Swale (G3) going seven furlongs on the main track at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 4 for trainer Shug McGaughey.

Cross Border (English Channel), a two-time Grade 2 winner (2021 Bowling Green 2020 Bowling Green), worked five furlongs in 1:01.6 at Fair Hill on Tuesday morning. It was the fastest of 17 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going six furlongs at Fair Hill. In his last start he placed third in the John Forbes Memorial going two miles on the turf at Far Hills on Oct. 15 for trainer Keri Brion.
