Kentucky Derby works: 7 in Las Vegas futures drill Monday

Brad Cox trainee Awesome Road returned Monday for his first work since a fourth-place finish behind Mystik Dan in the Grade 3 Southwest on Feb. 3. The son of Quality Road worked four furlongs at Oaklawn in 48.0 seconds, third fastest of 41 at the distance.

A maiden winner last August at Ellis, Awesome Road has run against graded-stakes company in three starts since. He is a 275-1 best price in Las Vegas.

These seven horses in Kentucky Derby futures worked Monday morning across the country:

Always a Warrior (Poseidon's Warrior) worked four furlongs in 51.5 seconds at Belmont Park on Monday morning. It was the 57th fastest of 98 works at the distance. His previous work was eight days ago going four furlongs at Belmont Park. In his last start he placed fifth in the Rego Park going 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track at Aqueduct on Jan. 28 for trainer Carlos David.

Awesome Road (Quality Road) worked four furlongs in 48.0 seconds at Oaklawn on Monday morning. It was the third fastest of 41 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed fourth in the Southwest (G3) going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on Feb. 3 for trainer Brad Cox.

(Constitution) worked five furlongs in 1:02.6 at Oaklawn on Monday morning. It was the ninth fastest of 12 works at the distance. His previous work was nine days ago going four furlongs at Oaklawn. In his last start he placed fourth in an allowance race going one mile on the main track at Oaklawn on Jan. 28 for trainer Brad Cox.

Give Me a Reason (Justify) worked four furlongs in 49.8 seconds at Oaklawn on Monday morning. It was the 31st fastest of 41 works at the distance. His previous work was seven days ago going five furlongs at Oaklawn. In his last start he placed fifth in a maiden race going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on Dec. 17 for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Lagynos (Kantharos) worked four furlongs in 50.8 seconds at Fair Grounds on Monday morning. It was the 39th fastest of 45 works at the distance. His previous work was six days ago going five furlongs at Fair Grounds. In his last start he placed sixth in the Smarty Jones going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Oaklawn on Jan. 1 for trainer Steve Asmussen.

Mission Beach (Curlin) worked four furlongs in 51.0 seconds at Belmont Park on Monday morning. It was the 28th fastest of 98 works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start he placed seventh in the Withers (G3) going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Aqueduct on Feb. 3 for trainer Brittany Russell.

Searcy (Good Magic) worked five furlongs in 1:00.8 at Oaklawn on Monday morning. It was the second fastest of 12 works at the distance. His previous work was nine days ago going four furlongs at Oaklawn. In his last start he placed ninth in an allowance race going one mile on the main track at Oaklawn on Jan. 28 for trainer Brad Cox.
