Kentucky Derby workouts: After missing race, Locked is back

After missing the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes with a reported fever last week, Locked returned to the track with a workout Friday at Palm Beach Downs.

The morning-line individual favorite in the pari-mutuel Kentucky Derby Future Wager this weekend was clocked going a half-mile in 49.68 seconds for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher.

Locked worked in company with stablemate Expressman. Ridden by jockey Jose Ortiz, the 3-year-old son of Gun Runner was timed with early fractions of 12.58 and 25.92 seconds, finishing on even terms with Expressman while running on the inside. He galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.82 and six furlongs in 1:15.54.

“He went really good. It was a normal routine work for him in 49 and change,” Ortiz said. “He had a great gallop-out, so I’m very happy with what we saw this morning.”

Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Walmac Farm, Locked is a prospect for the $400,000 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park. He has not raced since he finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 3 at Santa Anita.
